Cassian

Cassian is a winged Illyrian male, physically imposing enough that his presence fits the warrior reputation attached to him.

When he presents himself in the Hewn City, seven Siphons are visible on his body, reinforcing the dangerous public face he wears there.

After the catastrophic damage done to his wings in Hybern, Cassian reappears with the wings restored enough for him to fly and fight.

In the immediate aftermath of the war, his wings are bandaged and his leg is only just healed enough for him to limp.

Cassian is loud, physical, irreverent, and quick to tease or challenge the people around him. His informality with Rhys is open enough that he can insult him to his face without courtly distance.

In battle, his violence is paired with visible moral aftermath. Rhys has seen him tear enemies apart and afterward vomit or mourn them once the fighting is over.

His bluntness can be clumsy, but it is not careless. When he missteps with Feyre, he apologizes directly, and during training he meets her distress with steadiness rather than judgment.

Feyre understands Cassian’s training style as aggressive but bounded: he pushes her hard, yet she believes he would stop the instant she truly refused.

Cassian can use provocation as a safety valve inside Rhys’s circle. When Rhys carries a dangerous edge after accepting the mating bond, Cassian deliberately needles him into a physical fight that lets both males burn off violence without magic.

For all his usual fearlessness, one striking exception is tied to the library pit. He once flew to the bottom on a dare and came back terrified, and two centuries later he still refuses to say what he found there.

Physical training is also one of Cassian’s own ways to steady himself. After political strain damages the inner circle, he tells Feyre that brutal exertion helps him focus and center.

Cassian’s command does not end when a battle pauses. Among wounded Illyrians, he moves through the rows despite his own limp, offers praise and comfort, studies casualty lists, and prepares to visit families of the dead he knew.

When anger at the Illyrian commanders brings him close to violence, Cassian withdraws into solitary flight and returns to the ruins of his birth-camp. He uses the place as a private reminder of his mother’s loss and of the destruction his own rage can cause.

Cassian provides practical help without seeking credit. Before a severe storm, he buys the Windhaven clothier’s entire stock of winter gear for vulnerable families and asks that the aid be attributed to Rhys rather than himself.

In political intrigue, he is more comfortable with direct military action than political intrigue. Courtly deception and Eris’s verbal maneuvering leave him feeling clumsy, although he can still extract useful intelligence and fulfill the assignment.

Training is Cassian’s principal means of managing grief, anger, and fear. He trusts disciplined movement and breath because they steadied him through childhood abuse, wartime loss, military command, and Rhys’s captivity.

Cassian continues to carry guilt over the violence with which he avenged his mother. He does not treat recovery as quick or clean, having needed years to face both his loss and what he had done.

Even his hatred of Eris does not wholly override his judgment. He acknowledges that Eris could govern the Autumn Court better than Beron and weighs the court’s welfare alongside his desire for vengeance.

Rhys relies on Cassian as both army commander and unmatched warrior. Their closeness allows open insults and threats on the surface while Rhys still names him the best fighter he has known in any court or land.

Cassian helped Rhys get Mor out of the Court of Nightmares before they had the rank to do so safely, risking everything to help keep her away from that court. Mor says he still thinks of himself as an unworthy low-born bastard despite being worth more than the noble males she knew there.

From his first sustained contact with Nesta, Cassian is openly hostile and intensely reactive. He condemns her attacks on Feyre, refuses to let her sneer at Feyre’s sacrifices, and continues clashing with her at the Archeron house after their first confrontation.

Cassian becomes Feyre’s physical trainer after she asks to learn to fight. He accepts without waiting for Rhys’s permission and begins with practical hand-to-hand instruction, adjusting his teaching around the fact that her body was once human.

Mor chose Cassian for her first sexual experience when they were both very young because she wanted the choice to be hers and considered him one of the greatest Illyrian warriors. The aftermath helped create a rupture between Cassian and Rhys, but Mor says she and Cassian were never lovers again.

His bond with Feyre grows into protective loyalty within the Court of Dreams. Feyre believes he would remove her from danger even against Rhys if Rhys failed her, and Cassian formally pledges to serve and protect her after she is accepted into the court as Rhys’s mate.

When the human queens refuse to help, Cassian answers Nesta’s despair directly. He tells her he fought beside humans and faeries in the last War, vows to stand again on that battlefield for her people, and stays close enough to wipe away her tear.

Cassian protects Azriel under battlefield conditions in Hybern. He helps carry Azriel after Azriel is struck, and when the king’s power attacks, Cassian twists himself to shield him.

During the disaster in Hybern, Cassian’s attention repeatedly turns toward Nesta even after his wings are shredded. He stirs, reaches for her, and tries to move toward her screams despite pain and near-unconsciousness.

Cassian helps contain Lucien after Lucien arrives in Velaris with Feyre. He waits in the town house to judge whether Lucien is a threat and later physically carries him to the House of Wind under guard.

After Nesta is Made, Cassian keeps returning to the House of Wind under the cover of wing exercise while repeatedly offering to train her. Beneath their taunts, Feyre sees sorrow and longing in him, and Cassian admits he cannot stay away.

Cassian is angry when he learns Feyre was already High Lady before the mission to Hybern. He says that as Rhys’s mate and friend she was already someone he would die to protect, but as High Lady she belongs to the whole inner circle and they to her.

Guilt and fear for what the Cauldron made of Nesta run through Cassian’s concern for her. He says he promised to protect her in Hybern and failed, can sometimes feel the dangerous power in her, and would be afraid for Nesta having such power rather than afraid of Nesta herself.

Cassian remains physically protective of Mor when old Autumn Court dealings and the secrecy around Eris reopen old wounds. He moves to her side, puts an arm around her shoulders, and openly objects to Rhys and Azriel withholding the truth from the others.

Nesta’s public choices begin to draw visible reactions from Cassian that go beyond their earlier hostility. He is stunned when she implies she noticed his absence, takes her hand before winnowing to the summit, and is visibly shocked when she later defends him against Beron’s insults.

When the Wall falls, Cassian gives Nesta one of his knives and teaches her immediate survival rules for the war now reaching the human lands. His warning covers ash weapons, exits, ally and enemy positions, and how to strike if a human male tries to hurt her.

Nesta’s care for Cassian becomes openly physical during the campaign. She washes and bandages his injured wrist after battle, and when she searches for the Cauldron, he stands beside her despite his own near-fatal wound, bracing her and telling her nothing can harm her there.

Cassian and Nesta are repeatedly pulled toward each other on the final battlefield. He fixes his eyes on her when he speaks of dying for those who need protection, her warning likely saves him from the Cauldron’s blast, and he leaves her only when Rhys orders him back to command.

Cassian agrees to guard Nesta when she offers herself as bait for the King of Hybern, then fights beside her in the clearing until he is almost killed. Facing death, he tells her his only regret is that they had no time together, kisses her, and still tries to reach her after the sisters kill the king.

After the war, Cassian and Nesta barely speak, leaving their connection frozen despite what passed between them on the battlefield.

At the Solstice gathering, Cassian maintains a careful appearance of ease while watching Nesta closely. When she leaves alone for the freezing streets, he abruptly follows her.

Cassian insists on walking Nesta home because he can no longer endure their silence. He has kept a private Solstice gift for her after spending months finding it, but their confrontation revives his sense that she sees him as a low-born Illyrian bastard, and he throws the unopened gift into the Sidra. The memory that haunts him most from the war is Nesta shielding his broken body with her own as they prepared to die together, and he cannot dismiss his distress over her drinking or her involvement with other males.

Cassian becomes Nesta’s escort, trainer, and uneasy protector when Feyre and Rhys intervene in her self-destructive life. He enforces the move to the House of Wind while remaining alert to the danger of Nesta’s unknown power and the possibility that she might lash out at Feyre.

After recognizing that Nesta’s refusal centers on public training at Windhaven, Cassian moves their lessons to the private ring atop the House of Wind. He retracts his earlier claim that everyone hates her and says plainly that he does not.

Cassian increasingly advocates for Nesta’s control over contact with her family. He asks that Elain obtain Nesta’s permission before visiting again, tells Rhys that Nesta is making real progress, and resists the assumption that her hostility erases that progress.

When the Inner Circle pushes to make Nesta scry for the Dread Trove, Cassian refuses to let them coerce her, insisting that pressure would backfire and that the decision must be hers. He also admits that he wants children, imagining a family in which none of them would feel unwanted, hungry, or cold as he once did.

Cassian supports Nesta’s developing friendships with Gwyn and Emerie. He tells Rhys to stop assuming the worst of her and allow those bonds to grow, while offering Emerie practical help with the damage caused by her clipped wings.

During Nesta’s magical nightmare, Cassian’s voice helps reach her through the silver fire. He spends the rest of the night guarding her beside the bed and accepts her refusal to discuss the episode without withdrawing his care.

Cassian serves as Nesta’s physical anchor during another attempt to locate the Dread Trove. When deathly cold overtakes her, he continues speaking to her normally and uses touch, Siphon heat, and a kiss to draw her back.

When a kelpie drags Nesta beneath the Bog of Oorid, Cassian nearly loses control trying to reach her. He bows when she rises wearing the Mask, then catches and holds her as soon as she removes it and collapses.

Cassian and Nesta begin a sexual relationship under terms that she describes as physical rather than emotional. He accepts her control over pace and position, but his investment already exceeds the distance they claim to maintain.

Cassian admits that he has desired Nesta since they met and that his withdrawal after their first night together came from wanting her too much rather than rejecting her.

During Nesta’s breakdown in the Sleeping Mountains, Cassian holds her through her grief and answers her self-loathing with his own experience of guilt and survival. Their connection settles into trust as he places his Illyrian blade in her hands and asks her to resume the training they created together.

Nesta regards Cassian as a friend as well as a lover when she returns to the ruined Archeron cottage. He stays close without crowding her and helps her face the memories attached to her family’s former home.

At Solstice, Cassian gives Nesta a Symphonia filled with music gathered from the ball and her favorite taverns. After both confess fear and longing, he promises that there will be no one else for either of them and stays with her through the night when she asks.

Cassian tells Nesta that he recognized their mating bond after Solstice and had sensed its possibility much earlier. He welcomes public acknowledgment of their relationship, but his angry complaint that he had no choice in the bond wounds her and drives them apart.

Cassian does not fear the mating bond itself; he fears that Nesta will reject or resent it. When she, Gwyn, and Emerie are abducted into the Blood Rite, his response is immediate panic and fury, sharpened by the belief that their captors are punishing both the women and him for their training.

Although the Blood Rite’s law prevents Cassian from rescuing Nesta without killing them both, he also refuses to deny her the chance to save herself. He holds to the belief that his training prepared her to survive.

Under Briallyn’s control, Cassian resists an order to kill Nesta by turning the knife toward his own heart. He chooses death over murdering his mate even while the Crown controls his body.

After Nesta destroys Briallyn and frees him, Cassian claims Nesta as his mate in answer to her own acceptance of the bond.

Cassian responds to Nesta’s sacrifice of most of her power by asking what future she wants rather than mourning what she lost. When she chooses him, he accepts her request for a formal mating ceremony.

Cassian and Nesta live openly as mates while awaiting their ceremony. Their shared life includes training, intimacy, and his watchful protection without preventing her from visiting her father’s grave alone.

Cassian has no rare magical gift beyond immense Illyrian killing power, but that power is strong enough for him to have been granted a Siphon despite his birth.

Rhys considers Cassian the best warrior he has encountered and says Cassian could defeat him in hand-to-hand combat. Cassian leads Rhys’s armies because of that skill.

Cassian trains Feyre in battlefield fundamentals, from stance and punching mechanics to defense and Illyrian blade work. Under his daily instruction, her strength and weight begin to recover.

After the ash-arrow ambush, he handles large-scale military response without depending on magic alone. He obeys Rhys’s redeployment orders by organizing aerial patrol rings, foot soldiers, and warning fires along the southern mountain border.

Cassian has spent a century trying to build an aerial fighting unit of Illyrian females and prove they belong in battle. At the war-camp, he inspects the forces and uncovers that chores have been used to keep female trainees from lessons.

During the attack on Velaris, Cassian raises a red shield dome over the city and feels the impacts as winged attackers batter it. The defense drains him badly, but it holds long enough for him to judge the need for reinforcements and redirect Feyre toward cover.

Feyre’s survival after leaving the Spring Court proves the practical value of Cassian’s training. In fights against Dagdan and Eris, she relies on his lessons about balance, escape routes, endurance, and close-quarters technique.

Cassian understands Illyrian aerial combat as a discipline beyond simple flight. He warns Feyre that true airborne fighting requires weapons, shields, unit coordination, and decades of practice.

In the Prison, he has unusual practical knowledge of its inmates. Feyre identifies him as the person who knows the most about the Bone Carver because of his fascination with the prisoners and because he personally imprisoned some beings there.

As war expands, Cassian directs both army movement and battlefield planning. He pushes for the Illyrian camp to receive clear orders after the Wall falls, helps command the legions’ march south, and is the field commander trusted to use Jurian’s tactical intelligence.

Cassian reads terrain and military behavior quickly under campaign pressure. He chooses a battlefield for advantage, identifies Hybern’s river-crossing trap, disciplines Illyrian captains who want to break ranks, and reports when Hybern has claimed the stronger position.

During an approaching storm, he adjusts camp operations for severe weather without abandoning defense. He suspends training during an approaching storm but permits limited patrols by experienced volunteers because an enemy could exploit the conditions.

Cassian also contributes to long-term security planning and combat instruction. He works with Azriel on protocols for Keir’s eventual visit to Velaris and previously helped oversee much of Mor’s training.

For him, the Illyrian girls’ training is not symbolic or recreational. His standard for meaningful progress is twenty girls attending consistently for a full month.

Cassian can adapt his instruction to a trainee’s emotional and physical limits. With Nesta, he replaces public confrontation with private, technical lessons built around balance, posture, breathing, and body awareness.

In the Illyrian Blood Rite, he is a Carynthian, the highest rank earned. He, Rhys, and Azriel overcame deliberate separation, crossed the Breaking, and touched the stone atop Ramiel together, an achievement matched by only three other warriors in the preceding five centuries.

His hand-to-hand teaching emphasizes controlled mechanics rather than wild force. He trains students to root through the body, protect the wrist and thumb, and drive a punch with breath, core, and hips.

Cassian is a serious student of strategy and warcraft as well as a frontline fighter. His instruction connects each movement to practical battlefield consequences, and his manuscript The Dance of Battle records his study of combat.

In the Bog of Oorid, he combines extensive knowledge of dangerous territories with precise aerial tactics. He assesses supernatural threats, selects defensible ground, tracks Siphon flares through mist, and uses silent free-fall to enter an ambush without warning.

Cassian treats weapons training as a discipline of restraint and respect. He begins novices with wooden swords and reveals that his own instructors withheld steel for the first seven years of his training.

From personal experience in five battles beside the Valkyries, he recognizes Mind-Stilling. He begins combining surviving Valkyrie exercises and the eight-pointed sword-work pattern with Illyrian training methods.

Cassian can cut Gwyn’s silk ribbon cleanly with a single sword stroke, the standard he adopts as evidence that a trainee can hold her own in battle.

By the postwar period, he develops the new Valkyries as coordinated units rather than isolated fighters. His training includes changing obstacle courses, shield walls, group drills, simulated Illyrian attacks, and nightly adjustments designed to force tactical cooperation.

Cassian becomes more capable in courtly negotiation through deliberate observation. He uses a polished manner learned from Nesta and Rhys to stonewall and threaten Eris without surrendering useful information.

Cassian possesses a Siphon, granted because his Illyrian killing power is strong enough to require one.

In battle, Cassian’s Siphons can call armor over his body and blades into his hands.

Cassian keeps a personal cache of Illyrian weapons substantial enough to equip Lucien for a mission to the continent. Lucien leaves with steel from those stores, including swords, daggers, arrows, and a bow.

Cassian was born to an Illyrian camp laundress and an unknown or unclaimed father. As a child, he was thrown into a distant camp to survive or die, and when he was old enough to return to his birth-camp, he learned that his mother had been worked to death there.

At the Archeron estate, Cassian confronts Nesta over her treatment of Feyre and defends Feyre’s sacrifices to the human family she protected. In the same visit, he explains that wings and other visible differences mark peoples whom some High Fae dismiss as lesser faeries.

Cassian is present for both meetings with the human queens at the Archeron estate, first disguised in function as a guard and afterward standing with Feyre and Azriel when the queens refuse aid. His direct vow to Nesta places him among the Night Court warriors ready to defend the human lands again.

Cassian helps defend Velaris when Hybern’s forces breach the hidden city. The fight leaves him battered and slow to heal, and he immediately pushes the threat assessment toward Hybern’s knowledge of Velaris and the need to strike back.

On the mission to Hybern, Cassian carries Feyre through the air to the castle, explains the sea-door approach and guard timing, helps clear the route inside, and leads the final descent to the Cauldron’s chamber. When Jurian appears and the trap closes, Cassian shifts from confrontation to keeping the wounded Azriel alive under the king’s control.

The King of Hybern catastrophically injures Cassian by shredding his wings with magic while Cassian shields Azriel. The damage leaves only shreds of the wings, blood across the floor, and Cassian largely prostrate and half-conscious.

Cassian recognizes Feyre’s apparent surrender to Tamlin as a deception meant to save the others, even while Mor has to help him stand. He reaches the town house unconscious, with wing damage severe enough that Rhys believes he would prefer death to permanent loss; Amren slows the bleeding, but the injury still requires urgent specialist care.

Recovered enough to fight after the Hybern injury, Cassian returns to action by landing between Eris and Feyre, dueling Eris, and carrying Feyre home. Rhys later explains that a healer had to rebuild most of Cassian’s wings and that he is training daily to regain full strength.

Cassian escorts Feyre into the Prison when she seeks the Bone Carver’s help against Hybern. He enters fully armed, warns her that the Carver would be dangerous unless controlled or bound, and helps end the negotiation once they have offered enough.

When Nesta emerges sick and radiating dangerous power, Cassian quietly places himself between her and the others in a controlled fighting stance. He talks her down with humor until the immediate danger passes.

During the library breach, Cassian reaches the pit in time to pull Feyre away from the slaughter and fly both Feyre and Nesta out while the unseen creature attacks the Ravens below. The danger to both sisters drives him into panic and rage, and afterward he checks Feyre for injuries and gives both sisters rough steadiness.

At Adriata, Cassian is sent to bring the Illyrian legions into action and remains combat-capable while commanding despite taking hits. Afterward he helps handle the Illyrian wounded, casualty lists, relocation of the legions, and condolences to families of fallen soldiers.

At the High Lords’ summit, Cassian repeatedly holds a defensive line around his court and allies. He closes ranks when Nesta is questioned, strains against Tamlin’s insults and Eris’s presence, presses Beron on the need to rally armies, and helps turn the aftermath toward military planning.

In the northern battles, Cassian breaks Hybern’s left flank and kills a mounted commander with a thrown spear, inspiring awe in the soldiers under him. As the line collapses, he becomes isolated in the center, still charging Hybern commanders while his Siphons dim.

Cassian is gravely wounded after refusing to wait while the line breaks. A Hybern commander brings him down, and healers later close a massive sword wound from his navel to the bottom of his sternum; when he wakes, he insists he acted as a soldier because the line needed him.

Even badly weakened by the gut wound, Cassian helps respond when Elain is taken. He rouses the camp, warns Feyre and Azriel about the difficulty of reaching the heart of Hybern’s camp, and sharpens the weapons Feyre will carry under her robe.

During the final battle, Nesta’s warning pulls Cassian away from the part of the sky the Cauldron destroys. He lands beside her afterward, sees what the weapon has done, and accepts command of the southern flank even though he believes their side has no answer to the Cauldron.

Cassian joins Nesta’s attempt to lure the King of Hybern away from the Cauldron. In the clearing, he shields her and attacks the king to buy time, but the king breaks him brutally, leaving him crawling through blood with drained Siphons, snapped wings, and a thigh injury so severe that bone juts from the wound.

Cassian survives the king’s attack and the end of the battle. He is alive to witness Nesta and Elain kill the King of Hybern, later reaches Rhys’s body with Azriel’s help, and is carried toward a healer while still barely standing.

When Cassian became strong enough to return to his birthplace, he learned that his mother had died after years of abuse and forced labor. He destroyed those responsible, sparing children, some females, and the elderly, and killed the male who had fathered him by rape after Rhys and Azriel helped find him.

In the Bog of Oorid, Cassian helps fight Autumn Court soldiers before discovering that a kelpie has taken Nesta. He tries to enter the water after her and catches her when she emerges with the Mask and collapses.

After Nesta exposes the danger of Feyre’s pregnancy during an angry confrontation, Cassian takes her into the Sleeping Mountains. The punishing march gives way to direct care when he recognizes her wish not to exist, and he helps her begin speaking openly about her guilt and grief.

Cassian accompanies Nesta beneath the Prison to recover the Harp. When Lanthys escapes, Cassian draws the creature away from the exit, gives Nesta a lit Siphon to guide her escape, and helps kill Lanthys with a dagger despite being badly injured.

Cassian discovers that Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie have been abducted into the Blood Rite. The Rite’s laws prevent intervention, forcing him to leave their survival to the training he gave them while he and Azriel search for the captured Eris.

Briallyn uses the Crown to control Cassian and sends him against Nesta at Ramiel. Still conscious inside the enthrallment, he finds a loophole in the order to kill and directs the blade toward his own heart instead.

Cassian survives when Nesta’s returning power destroys Briallyn and breaks the Crown’s control. He comforts Nesta through the aftermath, confirms what she has done, and answers her declaration by claiming her as his mate.

During Feyre’s catastrophic labor, Cassian supports and physically restrains Rhys as Feyre and the newborn Nyx begin to die. He witnesses Nesta use the Dread Trove and her own power to save Feyre, Rhys, and their son.
