Overview

The Court of Nightmares is the corrupt, suffocating noble society of the Hewn City within the Night Court. Mor was born into this culture and escaped it.

A Court of Mist and Fury · Bk II · Ch. 17

The court preserves the darker remnant of the Night Court's former rule from the Hewn City. Rhys uses it as his territory's feared public face, while its inhabitants are kept ignorant of Velaris so they cannot expose the hidden city.

A Court of Mist and Fury · Bk II · Ch. 30

Ancient agreements grant the Court of Nightmares internal self-government and confine it within its mountain. Its leaders can even refuse the High Lord military aid, although outsiders still regard the Hewn City as the Night Court's true seat of power.

A Court of Wings and Ruin · Bk III · Ch. 19

By Solstice, the Court of Nightmares still functions through dark display and strict hierarchy, with its assembled nobles waiting for Feyre's permission before touching the banquet. The Night Court continues to manage the court through ritual, threat, and reward rather than trust.

A Court of Silver Flames · Bk V · Ch. 58

Appearance

The Hewn City is a vast underground metropolis carved beneath a mountain, with avenues, bridges, palaces, and running water. Its ancient grandeur and terrible beauty provide a lavish setting for the menace and excess of its High Fae inhabitants.

A Court of Mist and Fury · Bk II · Ch. 43

A moonstone palace above the Hewn City serves as Feyre and Rhys's official residence at the Court of Nightmares.

A Court of Wings and Ruin · Bk III · Ch. 16

Personality and Behavior

The court's noble families guard their daughters' virginity and use marriage to secure the greatest political advantage. Powerful females are valued for their bloodlines, power, and potential children rather than allowed to choose their own futures.

A Court of Mist and Fury · Bk II · Ch. 23

Its society responds to hierarchy, intimidation, and displays of power. Courtiers test perceived weakness but retreat into obedience and panic when their rulers answer with overwhelming force.

A Court of Wings and Ruin · Bk III · Ch. 26

Court ceremonies combine dark splendor with strict discipline: even at a Solstice banquet, the assembled nobles leave the tables untouched until Feyre grants permission. The ruling court manages them through ritual display, threat, and reward rather than mutual trust.

Relationships

Mor serves as the principal link between the Court of Nightmares and Rhys's chosen Court of Dreams. As his Third, she manages the relationship between the two courts and helps administer both the Hewn City and Velaris.

A Court of Mist and Fury · Bk II · Ch. 19

Rhys rules the Court of Nightmares through fear and periodic demonstrations of control, treating its nobles as dangerous dependents who must be reminded of his authority.

A Court of Mist and Fury · Bk II · Ch. 29

Traditional pre-Solstice visits by the Night Court's rulers are intended to preserve some goodwill with the Hewn City, especially after the losses of war.

A Court of Frost and Starlight · Bk IV · Ch. 4

The Hewn City's formal customs also support Rhys's alliance with Eris. Invitations to its Solstice celebration and ceremonial gestures such as a dance with Rhys's family convey political inclusion and respect.
