Flight Field

Overview
The Flight Field is the field beyond the natural box canyon above the final Gauntlet, where surviving cadets go for Presentation and face the dragons willing to bond that year.
After Threshing, the field also serves as the formal flight-training ground for newly bonded first-year riders and their dragons.
In the post-battle wartime routine, the field also functions as a patrol launch and return point for older riders.
Important Events
After the War Games battle, the field fills with dragons, celebrating Fourth Wing riders, and angry First Wing riders. Violet dismounts there, collapses near Andarna, and is confronted by Dain and Xaden about her lightning.
Before sunrise after the survivors return to Basgiath, the deserted flight field serves as their covert arrival point. Tairn and Sgaeyl land only long enough to drop Violet and Xaden before the riot launches again and keeps Andarna hidden from the quadrant.
When leadership runs for the flight field during the Eastern Wing attack, the movement signals a serious military response and makes the field the visible launch point for Basgiath's reaction.
Location and Access
The field lies beyond the ridgeline and box canyon above the Gauntlet, with the break in the tree line marking the way toward it. Normally only riders are allowed on the flight field; Presentation is the exception that permits first-years to enter after completing the Gauntlet.
A concealed tunnel exits on the eastern side of the field through a camouflaged door built into a stack of boulders, giving access without using the ordinary public approaches.
Another route runs from the courtyard through a gate and tunnel, then past the snow-banked path and the Gauntlet stairs toward the field.
Layout and Features
The field sits in a box canyon beyond the Gauntlet, reached after squads climb to the ridgeline. Its Presentation route includes a narrow valley entrance, meadows, surrounding peaks, and a path lined by dragons.
During the snowy post-battle patrol routine, constant second- and third-year traffic churns the box-canyon ground into muddy paths.
Function and Rules
For Presentation, cadets who survive the Gauntlet walk through the canyon to the field so the dragons willing to bond can examine them.
After Threshing, newly bonded riders are expected to reach the field by riding the dragon that chose them. The field also serves as the landing and recording ground for bonded pairs, with a dais, roll-keeper, Book of Riders, generals representing the wings, temporary bleachers, and gathered dragons present to witness the results.
The field hosts the first formal flight lesson after Threshing, with first-year riders in flight leathers, their dragons in position, and Kaori giving mounting and maneuver instructions.
Flight-field access after Threshing operates on rotating wing schedules, and flight classes become essential training for bonded riders.
The field can serve as a War Games launch site, with the quadrant's dragons arranged in formation and riders receiving final orders before taking off.
Basgiath's flight field also supports battle-mount instruction, using the box-canyon terrain, mounted formation work, dragon takeoffs and returns, and muddy landing space for repeated practice.
Residents and Affiliations
The field is used for Riders Quadrant operations: hundreds of dragons gather there, newly bonded riders train there, and instructors, wing generals, and the roll-keeper use it for lessons and bond records.
During wartime patrol cycles, second- and third-year riders and their dragons use the field constantly enough to leave its routes churned with traffic.
