Overview
Mental shielding is a rider's practiced mental barrier against overwhelming bond pressure and unwanted access through magical connections. Xaden teaches it to Violet when Tairn's emotions swamp her, using grounding and an imagined barrier to mute the dragon's presence.
For Violet, shielding develops into an urgent survival discipline at Basgiath, where exposed thoughts and memories can endanger secrets. She treats raised shields as a necessary posture around Dain, Varrish, Aetos, and other threats who may gain or exploit mental access.
Mechanics
Xaden's first method has Violet imagine a place that feels like home, ground herself there, open her senses to find Tairn's power as a current, and create a mental barrier against it. Violet's chosen image is the Archives, where she closes a massive fire-control door to dampen Tairn's emotions.
Violet's practice expands into closing doors, building walls, sensing routes of access, tracing dragon bonds, and distinguishing Tairn's door from Andarna's window inside the mental architecture of her power. Her dragons supply the power, but the control comes from Violet's own effort.
A shield can be adjusted rather than simply raised or dropped. During and after the arena fight, Violet blocks Xaden out while concentrating, then lowers the portion that admits him so she can send reassurance and love through their bond.
Uses
Grounding and shielding support controlled lesser magic as well as defense. Violet uses the Archives image during the pocket-watch exercise, applying the same mental discipline as a base for deliberate magical control.
Violet uses shielding to protect secrets and focus under immediate threat. She locks her shields in place near Dain because his touch can expose memories, raises them during the assassin fight to block out other voices, and secures them when Tairn warns that Varrish is approaching.
Shielding also works as a proactive security measure in hostile or uncertain territory. Violet arrives at Samara with her shields up, checks the walls of her mental Archives for weaknesses, and later keeps them locked in place from Aretia to Cordyn.
Limitations
Complete blocking is not possible against Tairn. Violet's first successful barrier mutes his emotions, but it does not cut him off entirely.
Sustained shielding is exhausting work for Violet. Through December and January, it becomes one of her most demanding ongoing assignments.
Keeping shields raised at all times is difficult even after repeated training. Violet has lapses during Battle Brief and in her room with Xaden, and she admits that holding them up still takes maximum effort rather than feeling automatic.
Shielding does not fully solve power surges driven by strong emotion. When Markham lies during Battle Brief, Violet tightens her shields around herself, but her lightning continues building with her anger.
Extreme stress and dragon emotion can break through Violet's defenses. When fear for Xaden combines with Tairn's primal emotions, her shields fail until Xaden shocks her with freezing water and orders her to rebuild them.
Mental shielding may not be enough against flier mindwork. Brennan warns Violet and Mira that shields may do little against the fliers' advantage, and Cat's emotional gift later affects Violet despite defenses strong enough to block Xaden.
Known Users
Violet Sorrengail learns mental shielding from Xaden and practices it intensively through her dragon bonds. By early training, she can use her imagined Archives to separate and regulate access from Tairn and Andarna.
Xaden Riorson uses mental shields as well as teaching them. At Samara, he tells Violet he missed sensing her arrival because his own shields were locked while he concentrated on a fight.
Important Incidents
Xaden gives Violet her first emergency lesson after Tairn's emotions overwhelm her. The crash course lets her regain enough control to dampen the dragon's emotional current.
Violet's shields collapse during a crisis in which fear for Xaden and Tairn's uncontrolled emotions flood her mind. Xaden forces an immediate reset with freezing water, and rebuilding the shields dulls Tairn's influence enough for Violet to reclaim control.
At Cordyn, Violet unknowingly blocks Xaden from her mind for much of an evening while Cat's emotional gift affects her. Once Violet understands what happened, she reinforces her shields and questions how Cat got past defenses that had kept Xaden out.
