Naolin

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Naolin is introduced as the dead former rider of the unbonded black morningstartail, with a siphon signet connected to Brennan Sorrengail’s survival.

Book I · Ch. 8

He is identified as Tairn’s last rider, and his death in Tyrrendor explains why Tairn had not continued as an active bonded rider-dragon before choosing Violet.

Book I · Ch. 23

Relationships

Naolin’s bond with Tairn was strong enough that his death nearly killed the dragon. Brennan uses that history to explain why Violet’s own bond with Tairn carries dangerous stakes if she dies.

Book II · Ch. 1

When Violet asks whether Tairn ever had to lower himself for Naolin, Tairn shuts down the subject with painful force through the bond and refuses to speak of the one who came before.

Book III · Ch. 47

Abilities and Skills

Naolin’s signet was siphoning, allowing him to draw power from sources such as dragons or riders and then use or redistribute it.

Book I · Ch. 8

Tairn later identifies Sloane’s manifested signet by comparing her to Naolin, confirming that Naolin’s power was the same kind of siphon ability.

Book II · Ch. 54

Important Events

Naolin died after attempting to use his siphoned power to revive Brennan Sorrengail.

Book I · Ch. 8

Brennan says Naolin did not fail to save him, but that the rescue cost Naolin everything. The exact method and full circumstances of the rescue are still not explained.

Book II · Ch. 2
