Rebellion Relics

Overview
Rebellion relics are shimmering magical marks carried by the children of executed rebel officers. They differ from the dragon-shaped rider relics granted to bonded riders, and Violet first understands them as warnings rather than honorable marks.
The relics serve as the visible basis for the marked cadets’ shared identity and legal restriction. Cadets who carry them are treated as politically dangerous, and the Code of Conduct makes an assembly of three or more marked cadets a capital offense.
Later, the relics are understood to have a strategic magical function tied to groups of marked riders, making them more than visible signs of punishment and suspicion.
Mechanics
The Treaty of Aretia names the marks rebellion relics and states that they were transferred to the 107 children by the dragon that carried out the king’s justice. Xaden once thought of his relic as a curse, but later calls it a gift.
Xaden’s relic prevents General Melgren from seeing the outcome of the battle at Resson. The effect is strong enough that Melgren prefers to see Xaden in person once a year.
Violet understands that Melgren’s signet fails when three or more marked riders are together, which explains the prohibition against their assembling. Their protection also keeps him from seeing them organize at Aretia.
The relics originated from 107 protection stones. Each stone was designed to counter the signet of the rider whose dragon would execute that child’s parent, and the stones activated only when the parents were killed by dragonfire.
When Xaden’s father was executed, heat raced up Xaden’s arm, matching the way the resulting swirls begin on marked ones’ arms. The relics therefore come from protective magic triggered by the executions, not simply from punishment imposed afterward.
Uses
Marked riders use the relics’ interference to hide organized activity from Melgren’s battle-sight. Aretia’s rebuilding and the revolution’s coordination remain concealed because enough marked riders gather there.
At Aretia, the relics mask both battle outcomes and organization when marked riders gather in groups of three or more. Their protection helps keep Melgren from seeing what the marked riders are doing together.
During the escape from Basgiath, marked riders are placed around the edges of the flight to hide the riot from Melgren’s sight. The relics become part of the formation rather than only a passive protection.
For Xaden, the relics also function as a practical trust marker. Violet believes he does not fully trust anyone without a rebellion relic to cover his or her back, even outside Navarre.
Limitations
Navarre’s law treats marked cadets gathering in groups of three or more as a capital offense. The Code of Conduct limits how many cadets carrying rebellion relics may be assigned together and sharply restricts their open assembly.
The relics expose marked cadets to visible suspicion and social exclusion. A cadet covers the mark during a discussion of the rebellion, and new squad members refuse to sit with anyone who carries one.
The relics do not protect people who lack one when they act alone. Xaden warns Violet that her lack of a rebellion relic leaves her exposed if she involves herself in Bodhi’s activities while Xaden is gone.
Two marked riders are not enough to block Melgren. When only Xaden and Garrick are present in the brig area, Xaden says Melgren already knows, reaffirming that the interference depends on at least three marked riders.
Known Users
Imogen carries a rebellion relic on her arm, marking her as one of the children of executed rebel officers. Other cadets refer to people like her as marked ones.
Every cadet at Xaden’s secret meeting carries a rebellion relic. Their shared marks identify them as a restricted group inside the Riders Quadrant.
Garrick carries a rebellion relic on his forearm. It remains visible while he acts as a senior cadet during Presentation.
Liam carries a sprawling rebellion relic that begins at his wrist and disappears beneath his sleeve. The mark helps Violet recognize that Xaden has placed one of his marked cadets near her.
Liam says 107 children carry rebellion relics. The marks can appear on very young children, and Julianne was born with hers.
Xaden’s relic is the largest visible example Violet has seen, twisting around his upper body and reaching his jawline. Garrick’s is the second largest she has seen, extending only to his shoulder.
Xaden fills the headquarters squad with marked cadets, including Garrick, Bodhi, Imogen, Soleil, Liam, and others who carry visible rebellion relics. Violet realizes everyone in the squad besides her is a child of a separatist.
Xaden returns to Basgiath with every graduate who bears a rebellion relic and many of their classmates. The group’s marked riders participate in the escape from the quadrant.
Important Incidents
Xaden says the 107 children who carry rebellion relics were allowed into the Riders Quadrant because he accepted responsibility for their loyalty. The relic-linked children are part of the same bargain represented by Xaden’s 107 scars.
At the Reunification Day party, Liam’s exposed relic draws the attention of officers and cadets. Melgren looks at the mark before identifying Liam by surname, turning the celebration into a public reminder of the executions that created the marked children.
Before the battle at Resson, Xaden reveals that his rebellion relic keeps Melgren from seeing the battle’s outcome. That disclosure changes the relics from visible stigma into active protection against Navarre’s most powerful battle-seer.
After Resson, Violet credits the relics with keeping Melgren from verifying the true battle outcome when three or more marked riders are involved. Aetos’s reaction shows that the interference limits how Navarre can answer the cover story.
Varrish treats Imogen’s rebellion relic as a practical obstacle when considering whether to use Violet’s squad as leverage. He believes Imogen would not willingly wipe the squad’s memories after seeing what happened, and the mark feeds his suspicion of the marked ones.
