Venin Ranks

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Venin ranks classify dark wielders by visible corruption markers and command role. The named ranks are Initiate, Asim, Sage, and Maven, with Mavens described as generals who have not been captured for examination.

Book II · Ch. 47

Rank also affects how venin move through their own hierarchy. New initiates and asims can be found and raised by elder venin, while Sages and Mavens are difficult enough to conceal themselves that even another venin may fail to detect them.

Book III · Ch. 12

Mechanics

Initiates have reddish rings around their eyes that appear and fade according to how frequently they drain. Asims show varying degrees of red in the eyes, and their veins distend when they are riled. Sages have permanently red eyes and veins distended toward the temples, while Mavens serve as generals.

Book II · Ch. 47

Venin rank can change. Wynn identifies herself as an asim and expects to rise beyond that rank if she delivers Violet, presenting advancement as something a venin can earn through service or reward.

Book II · Ch. 62

The visible markers seen among venin infiltrators match the rank framework: red-rimmed eyes, spiderwebbed or branching veins near the temples, and more advanced-looking red gazes. Xaden calls himself technically an initiate, while imagining Maven rank as the point at which he would lead armies of dark wielders if he surrendered fully to the power.

Book III · Ch. 2

Jack says new initiates and asims are traceable to one another and are usually found and raised by an elder, most often a Sage. In rare cases, a Maven may take interest instead.

Book III · Ch. 12

Uses

Rank markers give riders a way to judge immediate danger in combat. When Violet sees a blond dark wielder with red-rimmed eyes but no spiderwebbed veins, she classifies him as an asim and treats him as dangerous but more manageable than a more advanced venin.

Book II · Ch. 61

Violet applies the same marker-based judgment to Theophanie, weighing scarlet veins near the eyes and an unusually bright red glow around the irises against what she knows of venin rank. Her assessment places Theophanie above Jack in apparent advancement, probably at Sage level and possibly Maven level.

Book III · Ch. 10

Limitations

Rank cannot always be detected from proximity alone. Jack says Sages and Mavens can hide so effectively that even another venin might not sense them, leaving open the possibility that powerful venin could pass among ordinary people for years.

Book III · Ch. 12

Early rank does not prevent dangerous loss of control. Xaden's battlefield lapse shows that an initiate-level dark wielder or newly turned rider can channel from the source reflexively under combat stress and fail to remember making the choice.

Book III · Ch. 14

Source withdrawal is documented for at least one asim. An asim removed from source magic can seem even-tempered for the first twenty-four hours before more dangerous behavior appears, though the report does not extend that pattern to every venin rank.

Book III · Ch. 26

Known Users

The blond dark wielder who boards Tairn is identified by Violet as an asim because his eyes are red-rimmed without the more advanced spiderwebbed veins.

Book II · Ch. 61

Wynn identifies herself as an asim while trying to deliver Violet, and she expects that success to raise her beyond that rank.

Book II · Ch. 62

Xaden describes himself as technically an initiate.

Book III · Ch. 2

The venin blamed for Willhaven's destruction in Braevick is estimated to be a Sage. The adult survivor describes her as ageless, black-haired, red-ringed, and marked by bulging scarlet veins branching outward where age lines should have been.

Book III · Ch. 48

Theophanie is treated in practice as a Maven-level threat. Violet judges that she and Rhiannon together would not match a Maven, Sgaeyl refers to the Maven Violet kept occupied, and Violet herself thinks of Theophanie as a Maven during their confrontation.

Book III · Ch. 64

Important Incidents

Willhaven's destruction is attributed to a single venin estimated to be a Sage, making the rank directly relevant to the scale of devastation one advanced dark wielder can cause.

Book III · Ch. 48

During the fight with Theophanie, Violet's side treats her as far above ordinary venin ranks because of her speed, storm precision, battlefield planning, and coordinated trap. Her defeat depends on circumstances beyond rank alone, including her non-ordinary priestess history.

Book III · Ch. 64

Related Entities

Mavens are associated with command over dark wielders. Xaden's fear of full surrender to the power includes the possibility of reaching Maven rank and leading venin armies.

Book III · Ch. 2

Elder venin are directly connected to the rank structure because they find and raise newer dark wielders. Jack identifies Sages as the usual elders for new initiates and asims, with Mavens becoming involved in rarer cases.
