Overview
The Blood Rite is a week-long Illyrian warrior ordeal held when three holy stars align above Ramiel. Participants are drugged, scattered through the mountains with only their clothes, and deprived of usable wings and most magic; intervention is punishable by death for both the participant and the rescuer. Survivors are ranked according to whether they endure the week, reach the mountain, or touch the stone at its summit, while the sanctioned violence also serves as a release valve for unrest within the camps.
The Blood Rite Qualifier tests whether warriors possess the training expected of Rite participants without requiring them to enter the lethal contest. Completing the Qualifier establishes Gwyn, Emerie, and Nesta as trained to an Illyrian warrior standard, while participation in the Rite itself is ordinarily voluntary.
Illyrian tradition describes the Rite as an observance honoring Enalius's ancient defense and death at Ramiel. Touching the summit-stone completes the highest level of the ordeal; the Rite's magic immediately removes successful participants from the mountain and heals their wounds.
Important Events
Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie are snatched from their beds and forced into the Blood Rite against their will.
Gwyn and Emerie reach Ramiel's summit and touch its sacred stone, after which the Rite's own magic immediately removes them from the mountain.
Briallyn reveals that she manipulated this Rite as a trap intended to exhaust Nesta while her power was suppressed. Bellius acted under Briallyn's instructions, and she had weapons planted throughout the mountains to increase the killing. At dawn, the Rite's suppression of Nesta's power ends and her power returns at once.
