Overview
The Crown is a powerful mind-controlling object.
By the time Briallyn is using it openly, the Crown is in her possession and worn on her person, making it an active instrument of her power rather than a hidden artifact.
The Crown’s danger turns concrete when it is used against the Night Court itself, seizing a conscious victim’s body and forcing him to move and strike against his own will.
Even the fall of its wielder does not end the Crown: it survives intact, passes back into Night Court hands, and is gathered up with the rest of the recovered Trove.
Ownership or Custody
Briallyn possesses and wears the Crown.
The Crown survives Briallyn’s destruction and is left intact at Nesta and Cassian’s feet.
The Crown returns to Night Court possession, and Morrigan takes it away with the other recovered Trove objects.
Function, Rules, and Limitations
The Crown can penetrate formidable mental shields, but it must first be brought close enough to enter its victim’s mind. Once its influence is established, it can compel a conscious person to act against their own will.
Its enthrallment can persist after a victim has been removed from the immediate conflict and physically recovered.
Cassian and Azriel conclude that carrying another Made object may protect someone from the Crown, though this remains a possibility rather than a confirmed rule.
A controlled victim can remain conscious and capable of inward resistance while the Crown overrides movement and speech. Spoken commands direct the victim’s actions, but an imprecise order can leave room for the victim to choose how to fulfill it.
Ordinary magical containment cannot prevent Nesta from summoning the Crown when she calls it.
Important Uses
Briallyn uses the Crown to enslave Cassian’s body while leaving him conscious, forcing him to restrain and attack Nesta. She also uses it to halt the storm around the mountain.
Nesta places the Crown on her head while simultaneously wielding the Mask and the Harp, containing all three objects despite the expected danger of their combined power.
