Overview
The War with Hybern is an approaching conflict that threatens Prythian and the human lands beyond the Wall. Hybern is expected to weaken its enemies through secrecy, deception, and internal collaborators before attempting to shatter the Wall and begin open conquest.
The assault on Velaris turns the anticipated war into an active conflict, with the Illyrian legions already assembled for deployment and Hybern's larger armies still capable of fighting even if the Cauldron is disabled.
The conflict then becomes a sustained campaign marked by rapid redeployment, battlefield deception, wounded care, and repeated clashes with parts of Hybern's forces. Even when the allies hold their ground, they remain strategically disadvantaged because the enemy's main host is still hidden.
After Hybern's defeat and the fall of the Wall, the war continues through relief for displaced human families and Illyrian war widows, while the loss of the old border creates new political risks in the human lands.
The war is over, but its destruction and psychological damage continue to shape personal lives, Night Court policy, and the rebuilding of displaced communities.
Important Events
Jurian's resurrection and the massacres and raids against temples are identified as parts of Hybern's preparations, confirming that the threatened invasion is already being advanced through coordinated violence.
Hybern seeks continental reinforcements from Vallahan, Montesere, and Rask, while intending Prythian's conquest to serve as a warning beyond the island. Efforts to protect or repair the Wall, obstruct those reinforcements, and assemble allies therefore become parts of the same war strategy.
Even an alliance of all seven courts with the Night Court, along with Keir and the Court of Nightmares, is judged unlikely to defeat Hybern through conventional army-against-army combat. Hybern's superior numbers force the Night Court to seek unexpected weapons and ancient allies outside ordinary military planning.
The allied courts mobilize land armies, fleets, Peregryns, and Illyrian legions while organizing civilian rescues and defensive magic. Feyre also bargains for Bryaxis to fight Hybern, adding an unconventional force to the coalition before its members depart for separate fronts.
The conflict develops into a sustained campaign of rapid redeployment, battlefield deception, wounded care, and repeated clashes with portions of Hybern's forces. The allies remain at a strategic disadvantage because the enemy's main host is still hidden.
After Hybern's defeat and the fall of the Wall, relief efforts support displaced human families and Illyrian war widows. The removal of the old border also creates opportunities for courts such as Autumn to encroach on human territory, requiring continued political vigilance.
Agreements made to secure victory survive the fighting. The Darkbringers' wartime importance leaves Rhys bound by his bargain with Keir, preserving uneasy obligations and resentments within the Night Court.
Even after the fighting ends, the war continues to shape present life and policy. Nesta measures her body, panic, guilt, and relationships through what happened in the war, while shelter for families displaced by the fighting remains an active civic need.
The war's private losses remain immediate. Emerie says her father died in that war, and Nesta explains that her own father did not survive the most recent war.
