Bodhi Durran

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Bodhi Durran is Xaden Riorson’s cousin. He resembles Xaden closely enough that Violet guesses they are related, and he is comfortable enough with Xaden to challenge the harshness of Xaden’s response to a panicked first-year.

Book I · Ch. 7

Bodhi’s signet counters other riders’ signets, making him a powerful defensive asset in confrontations with Navarrian wielders.

Book II · Ch. 36

As Tyrrendor’s succession becomes a concern, Xaden treats Bodhi as the relative who must be ready to take over, while Bodhi insists on remaining a rider at Xaden’s side.

Book III · Ch. 55

Appearance

Bodhi resembles Xaden closely enough that Violet guesses they are related. He has tawny brown skin, black curls, a handsome face, and several visible uniform patches.

Book I · Ch. 7

Violet reads Bodhi’s features as softer and more approachable than Xaden’s, with bronzed skin, a strong brow line, lighter brown eyes, and less angular features.

Book I · Ch. 19

Personality and Behavior

Bodhi is comfortable challenging Xaden when he thinks a response is too harsh, even while remaining close enough to Xaden for the disagreement not to read as disloyalty.

Book I · Ch. 7

After Resson, Bodhi defends Violet by snapping that her lightning saved lives and invokes Xaden’s scars to support Xaden’s right to decide where the group goes next.

Book I · Ch. 38

Around Violet, Bodhi can be both protective and operationally hard-edged. He helps her after Varrish pushes her near burnout and gives her his flight jacket when she is too panicked to prepare for the cold flight to Samara, but he also admits using her as an unwarned control in a search experiment.

Book II · Ch. 26

Bodhi resents being held back for succession reasons when he believes Xaden needs every capable rider in the field. He argues openly that Xaden’s choices may endanger Tyrrendor and rejects being treated as a reserve heir instead of a rider at Xaden’s side.

Book III · Ch. 55

Relationships

Bodhi is Xaden’s cousin through the Riorson family line. Their ease with each other is visible early, when Bodhi challenges Xaden’s handling of a frightened first-year without treating the disagreement as disloyalty.

Book I · Ch. 7

Xaden’s correspondence calls Bodhi the closest thing he has to a brother after Liam. Bodhi carries Violet limited information about the next shipment and the forge, but his handling of her during Varrish’s search strains her trust.

Book II · Ch. 11

Bodhi is part of the small group, with Garrick and Imogen, that discusses Violet’s safety around Xaden without her and thinks she should reconsider sleeping near him.

Book III · Ch. 1

Xaden names Bodhi as his only living blood relative and says Lewellen will take counsel from Cadet Durran while speaking for Xaden during the Deverelli mission.

Book III · Ch. 20

Before the trial, Xaden treats Bodhi as the fallback steward for Tyrrendor if Xaden dies and tells Aaric that Tyrrendor would be safe in Bodhi’s hands.

Book III · Ch. 31

Bodhi is one of the few people trusted with the truth that Xaden has become a dark wielder, but Ridoc questions whether confidants loyal to Xaden are enough protection for Violet.

Book III · Ch. 43

When battle threatens both cousins, Xaden orders Bodhi to stay deep inside Riorson House because neither cousin has an heir and Tyrrendor cannot lose them both.

Book III · Ch. 51

Bodhi rejects Xaden’s attempt to make him first in line as a reason to keep him out of the fight. He tells Xaden that Xaden is the duke, Bodhi is the rider, and Bodhi intends to stand at his side as his right hand.

Book III · Ch. 55

Abilities and Skills

Bodhi’s signet counters other riders’ signets. During the Basgiath courtyard confrontation, he extinguishes Professor Carr’s fire mid-attack as if turning down a dial.

Book II · Ch. 36

Brennan counts Bodhi among the six most powerful riders available in Aretia for the failed wardstone blood attempt.

Book II · Ch. 39

Bodhi is skilled at battle-mounting from Cuir. In a demonstration, he lands running, cuts down Kaori’s projection with his sword, and remounts from Cuir’s foreclaw as the dragon accelerates.

Book III · Ch. 45

Bodhi learns to make one of Trissa’s delayed-activation runes during the Aretian rune lesson.

Book III · Ch. 48

Bodhi’s signet does not counter Theophanie’s apparent signet because she is not wielding the same kind of magic as Navarrian riders. He recognizes the failed counter while fighting back-to-back with Violet.

Book III · Ch. 60

Possessions

Bodhi’s flight jacket carries third-year rank, Fourth Wing insignia, and a section leader designation. Violet uses it as emergency travel gear for her unauthorized flight to Samara after leaving without proper flight leathers.

Book II · Ch. 27

Bodhi gives Violet two marked vials as a contingency against Xaden. The vials travel with Violet to Hedotis and become visible to Xaden when they fall from her pack.

Book III · Ch. 34

Important Events

At Resson, Bodhi chooses to fight after spotting danger from Athebyne’s battlements and pushing back against Xaden’s first order to hold. He and Garrick pursue a clock-tower venin on foot, and Violet’s stray lightning blast distracts a wyvern long enough for Bodhi’s dragon to kill it.

Book I · Ch. 36

Bodhi helps carry out the Archives break-in by assembling participants, guarding the entrance with Ridoc, and helping Aaric out of scribe robes after Aaric burns his hands. He also leaves with Sawyer to create a memorable cover scene once the group splits up.

Book II · Ch. 34

After the Basgiath exodus, Bodhi stands before the Aretian Assembly with Garrick and Imogen as one of the riders answerable for the decisions that brought cadets and dragons to Aretia. Brennan then credits him with bringing every Flame Section cadet, turning the section into what he calls the Iron Section.

Book II · Ch. 38

Bodhi helps run Violet’s midnight wardstone operation at Basgiath. He checks assignments, shields Sawyer’s infirmary bay with blue energy, keeps watch near the wardstone chamber, and expects Xaden to be furious if the group succeeds.

Book III · Ch. 7

Theophanie’s demand for Violet and Xaden’s “brother” first appears to implicate Bodhi, so he accompanies Violet, Xaden, and Brennan into the parley. Theophanie says she did not ask for him, confirming that Bodhi is not the brother she meant.

Book III · Ch. 58

During the battle at Draithus, Bodhi guards the rescue cluster while Brennan works on Mira, helps Brennan after Sloane revives him, and stays with Violet after Xaden leaves him with her. He tries to remain in the fight against Theophanie, but Cuir carries him away after Violet orders him to go because he promised Xaden.

Book III · Ch. 60

Bodhi and Cuir are nearly torn apart over Draithus when three wyvern attack them, prompting Imogen and Glane to break the order to stay grounded. Bodhi survives the fighting and is seen afterward across the town square on his hands and knees.
