Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Garrick Tavis is a marked Tyrrish third-year rider in Fourth Wing and Flame Section’s leader. He is Violet Sorrengail’s direct superior above Dain Aetos and one of Xaden Riorson’s trusted allies among the marked cadets.

Book I · Ch. 7

Garrick is Xaden’s longtime best friend, with a family connection that reaches back to Fen Riorson through Garrick’s father, who served as Fen’s aide.

Book II · Ch. 11

After the battle and the post-battle valley killings, Garrick is among the missing riders. Brennan identifies Lieutenant Tavis as unaccounted for, leaving his location and condition unknown.

Book III · Ch. 66

Appearance

Garrick is tall, dark-haired, pale-skinned, broad-shouldered, and more densely muscled than Xaden. His rebellion relic extends only to his shoulder.

Book I · Ch. 22

After Resson, Garrick has a new six-inch scar running from temple to jaw.

Book I · Ch. 39

Personality and Behavior

Garrick leads with a mission-first, no-niceties style. He gives Second Squad clear survival instructions before Presentation, but he also argues against killing Violet on principle, rejecting the idea of punishing children for their parents’ crimes.

Book I · Ch. 12

Garrick is willing to accept dangerous choices when he believes the alternative would abandon others. During the return-to-Basgiath debate, he supports the risk because the revolution cannot leave the remaining cadets to Basgiath or lose the weapon flow from the school.

Book II · Ch. 2

Garrick uses humor even in tense assignments, joking with Xaden during their pairing for the minor-isle search while carrying serum in case Xaden needs to be stopped from channeling.

Book III · Ch. 40

Relationships

Xaden says Alic came after Garrick during Threshing, making Garrick the immediate target in the incident that led Xaden to kill Alic.

Book II · Ch. 33

Garrick is Chradh’s rider; during the Basgiath operation, Chradh senses Resson-like rune energy while Garrick controls the Riders Quadrant dormitory with Devera.

Book II · Ch. 59

After Xaden’s condition becomes a danger, Garrick joins Bodhi and Imogen in watching over him and protecting Violet from the risk of staying too close. He supervises Xaden despite Xaden’s resentment and pushes Violet to change her sleeping arrangements because he believes the danger is real.

Book III · Ch. 3

During the fighting at Draithus, Garrick refuses to leave Imogen behind and offers to take Quinn’s body as well. He distance-wields Imogen and Quinn away in a single step, leaving himself exhausted and unable to make another long walk immediately afterward.

Book III · Ch. 63

Abilities and Skills

Garrick is an elite fighter by Xaden’s judgment and is skilled enough to spar with Xaden at lethal speed. He carries two swords and is associated with skill in multiple weapons.

Book I · Ch. 22

Garrick also has an active logistics role in the revolution’s covert weapon network. Xaden assigns him to ensure Syrena’s dagger shipment reaches the appointed location near Athebyne, and Garrick later runs weapons with Xaden to the Stonewater River front and Tecarus’s armory.

Book II · Ch. 46

Garrick has a hidden second signet involving distance wielding. Theophanie calls him a walker, his own comments imply that crossing distance costs significant energy, and Violet reads Xaden’s silence and expression as confirmation when she asks directly.

Book III · Ch. 12

Garrick is also an exceptionally powerful wind wielder. In Signet Sparring, he turns flames back on a fire wielder, strips weapons from opponents, batters ice defenses with a tornado-like gust, redirects a thrown dagger, and knocks multiple riders off the mat.

Book III · Ch. 17

Garrick serves as Xaden’s instructional substitute in Signet Sparring, first co-leading the classes and then stepping into the professor role while Xaden is gone. In that role, he challenges Carr’s methods and demonstrates precise control by stripping oxygen from a cadet’s burning hair.

Book III · Ch. 28

Possessions

For the minor-isle search, Garrick carries serum intended to help prevent Xaden from channeling if magic or danger to Violet triggers him.

Book III · Ch. 40

After Theophanie attacks his patrol with Mira, Garrick brings Teine’s green scale to Xaden’s room. The scale appears at first like a massive shield, but it is the message Theophanie lets him carry back.

Book III · Ch. 56

Important Events

At Resson, Garrick chooses to fight after reading Aetos’s missive, helps evacuate townspeople, and survives the battle. He remains active after Liam’s death and throws a dagger at the staff-bearing venin leader before the venin vanishes.

Book I · Ch. 37

Garrick returns to Basgiath alive after being listed on the Death Roll. During the confrontation that follows, he steadies Violet and then helps restore formation when Xaden orders him to get everyone back in place.

Book II · Ch. 4

During the Basgiath exodus, Garrick helps get Violet out of the brig, blocks Aura Beinhaven in the courtyard, and stands before Aretia’s Assembly with Bodhi and Imogen as one of the remaining Resson-linked riders answerable for the split.

Book II · Ch. 37

During the Defense of Basgiath, Garrick controls the Riders Quadrant dormitory with Devera after Chradh senses Resson-like rune energy. Lilith later assigns him to First Squad, Flame Section for the battle.

Book II · Ch. 60

At Newhall, Garrick arrives unexpectedly with Chradh after Xaden learns Violet has crossed the border. He survives the crash into the mountainside, resets Violet’s dislocated kneecap, helps her move between the unconscious dragons, and later leaves quickly because the rescue risks exposing his hidden ability.

Book III · Ch. 11

On Hedotis, Garrick nearly dies after eating poisoned cake. Xaden breathes for him, Trager supports his failing heartbeat, and Violet identifies fermented zakia berries in time for the group to administer the fig-slurry antidote that revives him.

Book III · Ch. 37

At Draithus, Theophanie rips Garrick and Mira from the sky while they are on patrol and releases Garrick only to deliver her message. After Brennan heals him, Garrick repeats Theophanie’s wording closely enough to reveal that she demanded Xaden bring his brother.

Book III · Ch. 57

Garrick brings the Rybestad chest to the northern field and opens it to reveal Jack Barlowe inside. When Theophanie tries to kill Jack, Xaden orders Garrick to remove him, and Garrick vanishes with Chradh and the trunk.
