Border War

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

The Navarre border conflict is an ongoing war-zone crisis along the kingdom’s protected edges. Battle Brief reports repeated attacks where wards falter, with mountain villages ransacked and riders dying as the assaults increase.

Book I · Ch. 18

The conflict has a long history rather than a single recent cause. Resson is described as the site of the first known gryphon attack in 1 AU and as a post that has changed hands at least eleven times across six centuries of border war.

Book I · Ch. 34

The raids are not only a conventional fight with Poromiel. Xaden says the pressure along Navarre’s borders is likely connected to attackers seeking the material that powers the wards, because that same material can be forged into weapons capable of killing venin.

Book I · Ch. 35

Mechanics

Information from the front is part of Scribe Quadrant work as well as military command. Jesinia says scribes are responsible for recording history and moving reports quickly from the front lines.

Book I · Ch. 18

Official briefings give cadets an incomplete view of the border. Violet reads that Athebyne is under nearly unbearable pressure from raids, and Mira says attacks occur so frequently that Battle Brief could not examine every assault; Mira also confirms a ward-failure village raid near Cranston in which a gryphon injured her.

Book I · Ch. 26

Outpost service is mixed-quadrant work rather than a rider-only assignment. A modeled operation includes riders and infantry for combat, a scribe to record events, and healers for medical needs, while infantry officers can expect dragons to be stationed near the outposts where they take command after graduation.

Book II · Ch. 15

Navarre treats border villages near strategic mountain outposts as part of its surveillance network. Regional notices tell residents to watch for strangers and refuse them shelter, while Markham presents attempted Poromish crossings as infiltration and propaganda; Violet privately suspects some crossings may be civilians fleeing a new offensive.

Book II · Ch. 17

Civilian deaths are also hidden inside the border conflict. Xaden says infantry at Samara’s border kill civilians who try to cross, that it happens often, and that Basgiath briefings do not include those killings.

Book II · Ch. 20

Uses

Basgiath uses the front lines as both a training exposure and a prize. Devera announces that the Squad Battle winners will shadow an active wing there, and Dain uses that trip to push Second Squad during practice.

Book I · Ch. 22

The front lines are also the expected destination for trained riders. Xaden is expected to be needed there after graduation, and Violet realizes that Tairn and Sgaeyl’s bond could pull her to the front earlier than her class would normally go or force Xaden back to Basgiath.

Book I · Ch. 24

Aretia uses the front as an active defense and supply destination. Its riders and fliers die while fortifying villages along the Stonewater River, and Xaden spends long stretches running forged weapons to the front and filling Tecarus’s armory.

Book II · Ch. 46

Limitations

Even direct witnesses do not receive open information about border incidents. After the ward failure and gryphon approach at Montserrat, the aftermath is treated as classified, and Markham gives only limited details about outpost damage and the absence of rider deaths while directing discussion back to Battle Brief.

Book I · Ch. 28

Disclosure remains limited even after Navarre’s military sees proof of wyvern. Brennan reports that the outposts disposed of the carcasses, Melgren kept the news from the general public, Poromish citizens were still being turned away, and Aretia doubled patrols along Tyrrendor’s borders.

Book II · Ch. 38

Important Incidents

Montserrat turns the border conflict into an immediate danger for cadets and stationed riders. A ward failure and approaching gryphons create a crisis that Violet expects may never be fully reported, and the classified aftermath confirms damage at the outpost even though no riders died.

Book I · Ch. 28

Xaden forces Navarre’s command to confront the hidden war by having dragons drop more than a dozen dead wyvern at border outposts. The maneuver sends leadership toward the border, leaves Basgiath exposed to the later mass disclosure and departure, and makes Melgren less able to risk an immediate strike on Aretia.

Book II · Ch. 37

Aretia treats new rider movement near the Tyrrish outposts as both a chance for defections and a military threat. Brennan orders riders not already assigned to scout those outposts to deploy quietly and determine whether other riders are deserting or preparing to attack.

Book II · Ch. 39

The midland posts continue to drain Basgiath’s third-year riders. Violet notes that third-years are gone half the time staffing them, Imogen returns exhausted after a night at one post, and Dain’s days away at the posts delay Violet’s chance to ask him for help.

Book III · Ch. 14

Related Entities

Athebyne and Resson are key border locations in the conflict. Athebyne is under severe pressure from raids, while Resson has a centuries-long record as contested territory and the site of an early known gryphon attack.

Book I · Ch. 34

Aretia and Tyrrendor are directly affected by the border crisis after the wyvern disclosure. Aretia doubles patrols along Tyrrendor’s borders while Navarre’s outposts manage the carcasses and continue turning away Poromish citizens.

Book II · Ch. 38

The Stonewater River front is where Aretia’s riders and fliers fortify villages and receive forged weapons. The fighting there pulls experienced forces away from cadet training and keeps Xaden traveling between the front and Aretia.
