Overview
Navarre is Violet Sorrengail’s home kingdom, the larger of the Continent’s two kingdoms. It is made up of six provinces and has been at war with Poromiel for four hundred years.
Navarre’s protected interior is safer than the lands beyond its borders because its wards stop non-dragon magic, including venin power. Xaden claims the kingdom knows Poromiel is being attacked beyond those borders and chooses not to help.
After Basgiath’s wards are restored, Navarre negotiates publicly with Poromiel at Basgiath while its rider culture remains hostile toward the Aretian defectors. The talks include the unresolved question of pardoning riders who left Navarre for Aretia.
Important Events
General Sorrengail is credited with saving Navarre by capturing the Great Betrayer. After the rebellion, Navarre forced rebel officers’ children into the Riders Quadrant, a policy described as unprecedented in its treatment of conscripts.
Navarre’s provinces first united after the Great War, gathering behind the safety of the wards and under the protection of the first bonded riders.
Navarre celebrates Reunification Day on July first to honor lives lost in the war against separatists and lives saved by the Treaty of Aretia.
Navarre is left defenseless when Basgiath’s wardstone lies in two pieces with no flame and the kingdom’s wards fall. With much of its military power displaced toward Samara and the midland posts, the immediate defense depends on the stripped forces still at Basgiath.
The scale of the Basgiath attack breaks Navarre’s hidden-war secrecy. Violet expects every Navarrian citizen to know within hours that they have been lied to because the attack is visible and wyvern bodies are falling across the kingdom.
Location and Access
Navarre’s territory includes mountainous regions that provide ore, deer, and elk, along with eastern provinces known for hardy timber.
Navarre is party to the Treaty of Arif with Krovla, which permits shared dragon and gryphon airspace over a narrow strip of the Esben Mountains between Sumerton and Draithus.
The warded interior of Navarre is physically and magically distinct from territory beyond the wards.
Navarre keeps its borders closed and asks mountain villages to watch for strangers and refuse them shelter in the name of sovereignty and safety.
Navarre has three well-carved routes up the Tyrrendor plateau, unlike the single deadly route along the Krovlan border.
The border remains closed to Poromish civilians even after Poromish children reach Basgiath. Aetos says King Tauri has refused to open Navarre’s borders and orders the boys returned home.
Navarre’s access to most isle kingdoms is politically dangerous because the kingdom severed communication after the isles sided with Poromiel around 206, and the isles killed later Navarrian emissaries. By the Deverelli mission, centuries have passed since any Navarrian set foot on that isle.
Layout and Features
Navarre is organized into six provinces, each of which sends candidates to Basgiath for military service.
Navarre’s military geography includes outposts, supply routes, troop-strength records, and skirmish locations, all sensitive enough to appear on a stolen map from Lilith Sorrengail’s office.
Navarre uses strategically placed outposts and stores of powered alloy to boost the wards and keep weak points from developing along its borders, though the mechanism is classified.
Navarre’s wards form a dome over the kingdom from the wardstone in the Vale.
Outpost ward extensions protect Navarrian civilians who would otherwise be outside the central shield; if Samara falls, the wards would rebound far short of the border.
Function and Rules
Navarre trains healers, scribes, infantry, and riders to defend its mountainous borders from Poromiel. Its military candidates can include volunteers, sentenced candidates, and conscripts, though the Riders Quadrant accepts only volunteers.
Navarre’s defense depends on dragon-human bonds that power protective wards around the kingdom. Those wards radiate outward from the Vale only so far and make other magic impossible within their reach.
Navarre restricts cadets with rebellion relics under an internal-peacekeeping policy, with Addendum 5.2 limiting how many marked cadets may be assigned together.
When the wards falter, Poromiel gryphon riders can enter Navarrian territory, channel, and attack villages. Border attacks are increasing, especially where the wards fail.
Navarre’s official records and briefings do not disclose all border or rebellion-related information. Classified treaty addenda hide parts of the policy imposed on rebel officers’ children, and Battle Brief withholds operational details from cadets and even many active riders.
Navarre keeps venin from common knowledge because it will not risk its own safety by sharing the alloy that kills dark wielders, the same material that powers the far reaches of its wards. Brennan says leadership can more easily control happy civilians than terrified ones.
Navarre’s institutions can monitor correspondence, censor letters, restrict Codex searches, and control what cadets read or carry.
Most Navarrian aristocrats choose infantry service rather than rider service because rider commissions are lifelong and riders are discouraged from holding family seats. Violet understands the custom as a guard against concentrating military and hereditary political power in one person.
Navarrian infantry at the border often kill civilians trying to cross, and those deaths are not briefed at Basgiath.
Navarre’s leadership maintains a centuries-old self-preservation policy that hides the truth beyond the borders. Lilith defends the lies as a sacrifice made to keep her own child safe, while Xaden and Violet reject the policy by exposing the hidden venin war and leading riders away to fight for more than Navarre alone.
Navarre banned runes a few hundred years after unification because runes could fall into the wrong hands and allow less powerful wielders to compete with riders’ signets.
Navarre’s ruling priority still favors border safety over alliance needs. The Senarium rejects a flier-safety solution on the grounds of protecting Navarre’s borders, while Violet accuses the kingdom of hiding lifesaving knowledge and refusing resources to Poromiel.
Unauthorized alteration of Navarre’s wardstone protections can be treated as high treason against the kingdom, but newly signed pardons prevent Violet from being punished for keeping fliers safe under Basgiath’s wards.
Basgiath begins folding previously hidden venin knowledge and signet tactics into rider education. Ward-weavers also protect the sparring mat in the amphitheater so most signets stay between opponents during wartime training.
Residents and Affiliations
Tyrrendor was the last of Navarre’s bordering provinces to join the alliance and swear fealty to King Reginald.
Navarre’s military hierarchy places General Melgren as commanding general of all its forces, with Lilith Sorrengail below him and other generals representing wings at Basgiath.
Navarre depends on trained riders to maintain its wards, but its military is under strain from rising attacks, shrinking graduating classes, and the loss of riders and dragons.
Navarrians call Fen Riorson’s movement an apostasy or secession and label its participants traitors. Xaden describes the same break as a loss of faith that the king would ever do the right thing.
The royal vault preserves Navarre’s military and institutional records, including journals of commanding generals of the armies since Unification, generals of riders, generals of healers, and scribes. Navarre’s unified command structure changed about two hundred years ago, after the Second Krovlan uprising, when rider command became command over all Navarrian forces.
Navarre is split in practical military terms after many cadets and dragons defect to Aretia. Its leaders consider the breakaway riders traitors but cannot easily attack them because Melgren has lost a large portion of the riders he expected to command.
Navarre’s provincial aristocracy gathers at Basgiath for negotiations, with representatives from the six provinces judging Violet’s role and the status of the Aretian riot. Despite her part in saving Basgiath, the wards, and the kingdom, Navarre still treats Violet as a deserter while the defectors’ return remains unsettled.
Navarre needs an alliance with Unnbriel because Unnbriel’s soldiers could defend Navarre’s borders while riders go on the offensive. Aaric presents himself in Unnbrish as the prince connected to Navarre when he tries to claim the fight there.
Tyrrendor is Navarre’s largest province and includes territory beyond the wards, with weaker historical allegiance than the kingdom’s other provinces. Aaric criticizes his own kingdom for refusing refugees under the king’s orders.
Tension grows between Navarrians and Aretian riders over whether Poromish civilians should be allowed inside the borders. At Basgiath, that resentment adds to the pressure around the retreat toward Draithus.
Tyrrendor’s takeover of outposts from Navarrian riders leaves Aretia undermanned, and Navarre comes close to declaring war on Tyrrendor after Tyrrendor defies the Senarium. Xaden’s cutoff of Tyrrish Talladium shipments exposes Navarre’s dependence on the province when Basgiath’s forge nearly stalls.
