Kiralair

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Kiralair is Catriona Cordella’s silver-winged gryphon, also called Kira. She works closely enough with Cat to pass along information Cat can understand, though Violet cannot interpret the gryphon’s tongue-clicks.

Book II · Ch. 53

Kiralair and Cat are visibly distressed when severed bond conditions cut off their connection at Tecarus’s Deverelli manor. Cat kneels with her hands on Kira’s face while the gryphon rakes the sand, making the disruption both practical and emotional for the pair.

Book III · Ch. 22

Appearance

Kiralair has silver wings and is light enough to move across unstable snow without throwing the footing into further danger.

Book II · Ch. 53

Abilities and Behavior

Kiralair is strong and controlled enough to evacuate an injured person by closing her beak around Sloane’s pack, lifting her into the air, and carrying her through a narrow opening while Cat rides her out.

Book II · Ch. 54

Kiralair can give Cat usable reports from her own perspective. Cat relies on Kira’s account of Violet’s aerial rescue of Sawyer, just as she understands Kira’s earlier warnings and comments when the cave team is moving through broken ground.

Book II · Ch. 62

Long direct flights strain Kiralair more than they do large dragons. She fades near the end of the overwater approach to Unnbriel, and Ridoc later uses her as the example for why a two-day direct return flight to the Cliffs of Dralor is unsuitable for the gryphons.

Book III · Ch. 43

Kiralair’s drift is valued for maneuverability near cliffs and for access to runes. In battle, Kira helps Cat pin a wyvern by the throat and tear between its scales.

Book III · Ch. 61

Encounters

During the cave fight with Solas, Kiralair is pulled under Andarna’s wings with Violet and Cat, but part of her far wing remains exposed and catches fire at the feather tips. Cat and Sloane put out the flames after the blast ends, and Kira then helps get Sloane out of the cave.

Book II · Ch. 54

Kiralair arrives at Newhall with the other gryphons after the first wyvern and tornado disaster. Her arrival places Cat’s gryphon among the delayed rescue group that reaches the village area from the west.

Book III · Ch. 10

Kiralair carries Halden to Cordyn in a claw-held basket and launches from Tecarus’s fighting pit with Sovadunn while the dragons initially stay behind. She continues with the selected delegation to Eistol, where Violet confirms Kira has landed safely on the third ring after Tairn and Sgaeyl deal with a nearby cross-bolt.

Book III · Ch. 30

On the approach to Zehyllna, Kiralair appears to lag, but Violet realizes she has fallen back to keep pace with Silaraine instead. After Trager’s death, Kira moves beside Silaraine, shoulders some of her weight, and extends a wing over Sila’s body after she collapses.

Book III · Ch. 39

At Draithus, Kiralair is part of the drift ordered to guard evacuees under Bragen instead of joining the dragons’ first interception. Kira is disgruntled by the assignment, but the order uses the gryphons’ cliffside maneuverability where the evacuees need protection.
