Trager Karis

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Trager is a tall flier in Cat’s drift who stands out early for his hostility toward Rhiannon after insulting her border village.

Book II · Ch. 45

Trager has enough healing training to help treat the wounded in the infirmary, where he works at a bedside and reaches for needle and thread.

Book III · Ch. 1

By the time of the expanded isle expedition, Trager is included partly for his healing training and partly so the group can split if necessary.

Book III · Ch. 29

After his death on Zehyllna, Drake names him formally as Trager Karis during the beach funeral rite and commends his soul to Malek.

Book III · Ch. 40

Appearance

Trager is tall, with shoulder-length brown hair and a crooked smile.

Book II · Ch. 45

Personality and Behavior

In group discussions, Trager speaks bluntly and practically. He suggests watches when riders may be dangerous, challenges officers over abandoning Newhall, pushes back on Ridoc’s joke about Xaden, tells Cat directly to stop chasing someone who does not want her, and offers route ideas during expedition planning.

Book III · Ch. 28

Relationships

Trager’s early relationship with Rhiannon is openly hostile. After he insults her border village and swings at Ridoc, Rhiannon punches him hard enough to leave his lip scabbed; when he challenges her again, she beats him in under five minutes and makes the injury bleed.

Book II · Ch. 46

Within the integrated squad, Trager is visibly grouped with Cat and Maren on the flier side. At Battle Brief he sits beside Maren while Cat takes the seat between them.

Book III · Ch. 7

During the expedition route debate, Trager remains at ease with Cat and the integrated group while Cat works a knot from his shoulders and interrupts his proposed route as too long.

Book III · Ch. 28

Trager and Cat have a visible romantic or intimate connection on Hedotis, where they walk hand in hand along the beach. Xaden says Trager has been pining after Cat for years, giving his interest in her a longer history.

Book III · Ch. 34

Silaraine is Trager’s gryphon. At Xortrys he reconnects with her happily, laughing and scratching beneath her silver-feathered jaw.

Book III · Ch. 38

After Trager dies, Cat says he would want to be with Sila and refuses to leave any part of him on Zehyllna, asking that his body be burned too.

Book III · Ch. 39

Abilities and Skills

Trager is trained enough as a healer to assist wounded patients in the infirmary, where he works at a bedside and reaches for needle and thread.

Book III · Ch. 1

His medical skill includes checking stitched wounds. On Hedotis he examines Violet’s six stitches for infection or swelling and recognizes that Xaden’s fourteen-stitch gash is not fine.

Book III · Ch. 33

When Garrick stops breathing, Trager acts as the medic: he asks what Garrick was given, begins chest compressions to strengthen his heartbeat, orders Xaden to keep breathing for him, monitors Garrick afterward, and helps position him for treatment.

Book III · Ch. 37

Important Events

Trager joins the overnight library effort to help Violet search for what was missed in Warrick’s journal, placing him among the fliers contributing to the ward problem despite earlier hostility within the integrated group.

Book II · Ch. 57

Trager joins the expanded isle expedition partly because of his healing training and partly so the party can split if necessary.

Book III · Ch. 29

During Zihnal’s gift ceremony on Zehyllna, Trager draws the arrow card and is struck through the heart. Ridoc confirms that he has no pulse, and his death breaks Cat, shakes the squad, and is followed by Silaraine’s death.

Book III · Ch. 39

Aotrom carries Trager’s body to a tiny isle, where he is burned on a beach pyre with Silaraine.

Book III · Ch. 40

When the party returns to Basgiath, Cat reports Trager’s death to Rhiannon and Sawyer, saying he died on Zehyllna from an arrow to the heart.
