Overview
The Autumn Court is a beautiful but brutally cutthroat realm.
It later appears directly as a cold, vividly colored land of forests, orchards, fields, foothills, and mountains, with sentries and broad territory that make secret passage through it dangerous and slow.
Autumn enters the war against Hybern as its most reluctant member, its commitment perpetually hedged by Beron's obstruction and his contempt for the human cause.
Its ruling house is divided, with Eris openly trying to delay Beron's alliance with Briallyn while seeking the throne for himself.
Beron's violence toward his own heir and his possible alignment with Koschei keep the court a continuing source of instability.
Important Events
During the alliance against Hybern, Beron withholds Autumn's commitment, rejects risks intended to protect allied forces, and dismisses the defense of humans.
Beron leaves the High Lords' summit promising only to consider fighting. Other leaders expect Autumn to join the anti-Hybern coalition if the balance of power makes that the safer choice, rather than from principle.
Mor was abandoned, gravely wounded, just beyond Autumn's border. Eris ordered his patrol not to touch her because offering aid would make her the court's responsibility.
Several dozen Autumn soldiers disappear without signs of battle. Eris also reports that Beron has secretly pledged the court's forces to Briallyn, creating the threat of another Fae war.
Armed warriors from Autumn attack Azriel's party in the Bog of Oorid, and the surviving attackers wear armor bearing Eris's insignia. Whether Eris, Beron, or both ordered the assault is initially unresolved.
The missing soldiers may have been controlled by an outside power and used to recover the Mask or provoke conflict between Autumn and the Night Court, rather than acting on the court's own orders.
Location and Access
The court covers an extensive territory protected by sentries. Even the lands surrounding Beron's seat take several days to cross, and travelers seeking concealment must avoid its patrols.
Autumn shares a border with Winter, whose territory places a limit on the open pursuit of Autumn forces.
A border corridor also runs along the seam between the Autumn and Summer Courts and provides a northern military route toward Winter.
Layout and Features
The cold, vividly colored landscape contains old forests, mossy ground, streams, orchards, barley fields, foothills, and mountains.
Function and Rules
Succession among the High Lord's sons favors the strongest claimant rather than the eldest. The system makes brothers direct competitors and supports the ruling family's lethal enforcement of bloodline and status.
The High Lord's wife holds the title Lady of the Autumn Court rather than High Lady.
Residents and Affiliations
Lucien is Beron's seventh son and publicly identifies himself through that lineage, but he considers himself estranged from the Autumn Court and denies that he belongs there.
Beron appears with his wife and remaining sons. The sons present an openly hostile family front in dealings with the other courts.
Eris is Autumn's heir.
Keir pursues political ties with Autumn through Eris, while Rhys permits the contacts only under observation.
Eris works against Beron's plans while seeking the throne for himself.
