Overview
Before Amarantha's fall, Summer suffered heavily in the failed rebellion against her: its High Lord was killed with most of his family, and Summer families such as Alis's lost loved ones.
The Summer Court is a maritime court with several cities and a political center in the coastal capital of Adriata. Tarquin rules as its High Lord, with Cresseida and Varian among the leading members of his court.
Under Tarquin, Summer favors peace, safety, fairer government, and alliances over conflict among Prythian's courts.
During the war with Hybern, Summer became a principal battlefield as armies crossed from Spring into its territory and fought Tarquin's soldiers at the river and in the eastern forest.
Important Events
Summer's High Lord joined an unsuccessful coalition against Amarantha. She crushed the rebellion and killed him along with most of his family, while her conquest also cost Summer families such as Alis's their loved ones.
After Amarantha's fall, Summer's High Lord contributed a portion of his power to restore Feyre to life as High Fae.
Amarantha's occupation left lasting damage across Adriata. The rebuilding city contains shattered structures under repair and survivors bearing scars and amputations.
The Night Court's theft from Summer's hidden trove provoked Tarquin into sending blood rubies to Rhys, Feyre, and Amren, formally marking them for death.
Hybern launched a surprise siege against Adriata while Summer's fleet was dispersed along the coast and much of its land army stood near the Spring border. The capital was left with only half its armada and no nearby legion able to reinforce it quickly.
Summer's soldiers defended Adriata's palace and drove Hybern's forces back toward the sea. Once the surprise advantage was broken, Tarquin judged that Summer could hold the bay with its own forces.
Tarquin ended Summer's blood-ruby feud with the Night Court as the courts assembled against Hybern, restoring cooperation between them.
Summer became a principal theater of the war when Hybern's armies crossed from Spring. Tarquin's soldiers trapped one force at a river, while another engagement unfolded in the eastern forest along Summer's borderlands.
Location and Access
Adriata stands beside the sea, and the court traditionally occupies its capital during late winter and early spring.
Summer shares borderlands with the Spring Court, including river and eastern forest approaches through which armies can cross between their territories.
Layout and Features
Adriata's airy palace overlooks the sea and incorporates sea glass, fountains, and open views.
The palace separates its public elite spaces from a lower service level where workers are expected to pass unseen. Beneath Summer territory lie several enormous treasure troves containing inherited jewels, weapons, clothing, books, and other heirlooms.
One hidden repository lies within a tidal ruin reached by a causeway between the mainland and an island. Guard posts and rotating watches protect the site, while its concealed entrance is keyed to the ruling High Lord's blood and power.
Function and Rules
The court has an old association with Summer Solstice and formerly hosted its principal celebration.
Summer's earliest High Lords prized treasure, and the court continues to preserve vast collections as an inherited custom.
Summer's rulers send blood rubies when they formally condemn someone for a grave offense and declare that person marked for death.
Summer Solstice serves as the court's principal communal solstice holiday rather than the Winter Solstice observed in the Night Court.
Residents and Affiliations
Alis and her kin originate from the Summer Court, where members of her family continue to live.
Tarquin's governing circle includes Cresseida, Varian, and advisers responsible for the city, court, and trade.
Summer belongs to the alliance of Prythian courts opposing Hybern and offers its territory as refuge for displaced civilians from Spring.
Summer and Spring have a longstanding connection as Seasonal Courts. During the unstable postwar period, Tarquin commits Summer soldiers to patrol Spring's vulnerable border.
