Cliffs of Dralor

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

The Cliffs of Dralor are a natural protective barrier associated with Tyrrendor and part of the province's defining geography.

Book I · Ch. 2

As the war expands, the cliffs serve as an active defensive frontier rather than only a geographic boundary.

Book II · Ch. 45

Important Events

Along the Medaro Pass route, the cliffs become a lethal trap when cloud cover hides riderless wyvern. The ledges, mist, and narrow path leave riders, fliers, and injured cadets exposed until the clouds can be forced away from the cliff.

Book II · Ch. 44

During the Draithus crisis, the cliffs mark the route toward safety and the wards. Tairn has to haul Teine many miles and roughly ten thousand feet upward in that direction, carrying him far enough away that Violet loses meaningful access to his power.

Book III · Ch. 60

Location and Access

The cliffs separate Tyrrendor and lift the province thousands of feet above the rest of the Continent. They help situate Gianfar's ancient stronghold along Tyrrendor's southern border.

Book I · Ch. 21

Travel toward Athebyne can follow the mountain range along the border and skirt the cliffs rather than cross them directly. The outpost lies near the end of that range, close to a strategic border valley.

Book I · Ch. 35

Below Athebyne, open plains stretch for miles before reaching the cliffs, placing Resson, the outpost, and the border valley within the same battlefield geography.

Book I · Ch. 36

A southbound formation from Basgiath can enter Tyrrendor by flying high over the Cliffs of Dralor onto the plateau. The crossing marks a major stage on the route toward Aretia.

Book II · Ch. 36

From Aretia, the cliffs also stand on the southward flight route toward Krovla and Cordyn, with travelers crossing them a few hours after departure.

Book II · Ch. 40

Gryphon fliers cannot simply fly into Tyrrendor over the highest sections; the cliffs force them to climb through the terrain instead.

Book II · Ch. 43

Precipice Pass provides a civilian-access route up the northeast side of the cliffs, but the route is narrow enough that only slim wagons can use it.

Book II · Ch. 45

From the volcanic minor isle, a northeast flight of about two days would reach the Cliffs of Dralor, but the route is impractical for a mixed party because only the larger dragons have the endurance for it.

Book III · Ch. 43

Near Draithus, the map leaves little space between the city and the Cliffs of Dralor for the thousands of civilians trying to flee through the pass. The climb toward the cliffs is severe enough that Violet doubts everyone can reach safety if Draithus falls.

Book III · Ch. 57

Layout and Features

The Cliffs of Dralor rise more than twelve thousand feet in places. Their terrain includes high ledges, switchbacks, cloud cover, and punishing altitude.

Book II · Ch. 43

The nearest edge above the Draithus approach drops roughly ten thousand feet, making the descent route a major physical obstacle even for dragons moving at speed.

Book III · Ch. 58

Function and Rules

The cliffs help keep Tyrrendor relatively safe because they are a natural barrier that gryphons cannot scale.

Book I · Ch. 25

Their height gives Tyrrendor a geological advantage over other provinces, strong enough that travelers may choose routes around the cliffs instead of attempting a direct crossing.

Book I · Ch. 34

The cliffs' defensive value is significant enough that Violet connects them to the Tyrrish rebellion's ability to survive and nearly succeed.

Book I · Ch. 38

Violet sees the Cliffs of Dralor as an important defensive boundary, but she is urgently concerned that wyvern might still crest them before Aretia's wards are ready.

Book II · Ch. 38

The cliffs remain a practical limitation on travel: a gryphon has to be comfortable with the cliff wall for a pass to cover long-distance movement, and some routes still end with fliers climbing on foot.

Book II · Ch. 52

Residents and Affiliations

Commissioned riders who are not teaching rotate through outposts along the Cliffs of Dralor. Xaden, Garrick, Heaton, and Emery are among those assigned to shifts there against wyvern and Navarrian riders.
