Cordyn

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Cordyn is a city on the southern coast of the Krovlan province. From Violet and Xaden’s side of the war, reaching it by dragon means entering enemy territory dangerous enough that Xaden warns Violet she could be captured and killed there.

Book II · Ch. 32

The city has political weight in Poromiel because its viscount is Queen Maraya’s named heir. It also serves as a refuge after Zolya and Cliffsbane fall.

Book II · Ch. 41

As the venin spread through Krovla, Cordyn still stands, though its position is increasingly precarious.

Book III · Ch. 44

Important Events

Cordyn is not taken during the Pavis attack. Garrick notes that the venin and wyvern skip over it and hundreds of other miles, making their movement look targeted rather than like a continuous westward sweep.

Book II · Ch. 50

Venin forces close to within less than a day’s wyvern flight of Cordyn. The city becomes a key southern reference point in route planning because the surrounding danger affects whether travelers can move through Deverelli, Athebyne, and Basgiath.

Book III · Ch. 28

The rapid red spread across Krovla leaves Cordyn standing but threatened. Its survival matters enough that commanders discuss southern defense around it rather than treating the city as already lost.

Book III · Ch. 44

Location and Access

Cordyn lies between Zolya and Draithus and is the next largest city on that stretch. Violet estimates it is roughly ten hours by Tairn from Aretia, though it is not entirely safe.

Book II · Ch. 38

The route from Aretia to Cordyn crosses Krovla, passing harvest fields, pale beaches, and a blue-green sea before reaching the city.

Book II · Ch. 40

Cordyn can serve as a mainland departure point for Deverelli, with Asher’s emergency instructions sending Violet there to book passage across the sea.

Book III · Ch. 18

On the expedition south, Cordyn is the last southern mainland stop before the crossing to Deverelli. Its warm, humid climate contrasts sharply with the snowy north.

Book III · Ch. 21

With the city all but blockaded, the only route into Cordyn that does not cross venin-held territory is by sea.

Book III · Ch. 55

Layout and Features

Tecarus’s palace is a major Cordyn site, large enough to hold the fliers and refugees gathered there after nearby Poromish losses.

Book II · Ch. 41

Cordyn’s shoreline is marked by coarse, grainy beach, a mainland contrast to Deverelli’s fine white sand.

Book III · Ch. 22

Function and Rules

Cordyn houses Tecarus’s luminary. Under Tecarus’s old arrangement, the revolution would have been allowed to use the luminary only in Cordyn rather than take it home, which Xaden rejects as unacceptable.

Book II · Ch. 48

Cordyn is treated as a refuge option for fliers who choose not to remain in warded Aretia. Imogen says they could shelter there with power and dark wielders.

Book II · Ch. 52

Military planners treat Cordyn as part of the southern defense problem. Devera considers assigning Zehyllna’s troops there, Cat argues for holding the southern line, and Kiandra uses Cordyn as an example of a city current cadets may soon have to defend.

Book III · Ch. 44

Residents and Affiliations

Cordyn is affiliated with Poromiel’s royal succession through its viscount, Queen Maraya’s named heir. Cat and many fliers are present at Tecarus’s palace there after the fall of Zolya and Cliffsbane.

Book II · Ch. 41

Cordyn is identified as Tecarus’s seat of power, anchoring his mainland authority as the southern front worsens.

Book III · Ch. 44

Syrena is cut off from Cat by the danger around Cordyn, since the city’s blockade prevents Cat from safely reaching her.
