Defense of Basgiath

Once the wards fall, the defense works as a delaying action rather than a clean battlefield plan. The defenders hunt lures, divide the airspace into sectors, assign active riders to cadet squads, prepare healers and evacuation, and try to hold the Vale and Basgiath against a thousand incoming wyvern and venin until reinforcements can arrive.

The full battle uses both aerial and ground defenses. Riders cover ridgeline and Vale-side sectors, Violet’s squad guards the airspace above the hidden ward-chamber entrance, infantry move through campus as the last ground line, and the defenders buy time for Brennan to repair the wardstone while Jesinia searches for the correct answer to raise the wards.

During a dangerous lull, leadership considers abandoning parts of the field. The proposed strategy uses most cadets and remaining forces to delay the horde while concentrating protection on the Vale.

The defense is meant to protect Navarrian civilians when Violet decides Aretia has to return and fight rather than leave Basgiath exposed. Her reasoning treats those civilians as people who may be needed against the real enemy, not as acceptable losses because they live under Navarre.

After the ward failure, the defense’s practical purpose is to keep the Vale and the fortress from being overrun long enough for help or a ward solution to matter.

The fallen wards leave Navarre defenseless and immediately free the venin to press the attack. The same crisis also exposes a prior weakness: Jack and other venin had already survived inside the protections before the wardstone broke.

The defense strains under simultaneous aerial assault, rescue work, evacuation, uncertainty over the repaired wardstone, and venin infiltration on the ground. Even with Melgren approaching, the defenders are still overwhelmed, Brennan’s repair remains doubtful, and a venin reaches Violet near the cliff-side field while the horde waits for permission to attack again.

Basgiath’s immediate post-battle security fails to locate every remaining venin because some are already inside the fortress. Their scribe disguises let them pass through Basgiath and feed unnoticed until visible venin signs expose them.

Violet, Xaden, Mira, Rhiannon’s squad, and a riot of fifty dragons are the first named force to leave Aretia for Basgiath when the mission begins.

The broader defense includes riders, cadet squads, infantry, healers, Brennan, and Jesinia, with each group assigned a practical role in holding the campus or restoring the wards.

Violet, Lilith, Sloane, and Andarna are directly involved in the decisive ward-restoration effort: Violet goes below the college to power the wardstone, Lilith redirects the solution through Sloane’s siphon and her own sacrifice, and Andarna provides the seventh fire needed to complete the wards.

The decisive breach begins when Jack kills Baide against Basgiath’s burning wardstone. Baide’s blood extinguishes the black flames, her collapse tips the stone, the stone cracks, the ward hum stops, and Violet recognizes that the wards have fallen.

Before dawn, the defense opens into full aerial combat around Basgiath. The defenders hold assigned sectors and protect the hidden ward-chamber entrance while the ground forces prepare for whatever reaches campus.

The decisive restoration attempt takes place while the horde waits and the battlefield is already littered with dead wyvern and dragons. Violet leaves the gate battle to power the wardstone, Lilith sacrifices herself through Sloane’s siphon, and Andarna’s seventh fire completes the raising of the wards.

The hidden cost of the defense includes Xaden’s ordeal at the ravine. While Violet is below the college raising the wards, he is trapped, nearly burned out, and pressured into channeling from the earth to save her.

Sawyer survives the immediate aftermath long enough to undergo surgery while Xaden and others wait for hours outside the clinic.

After the battle, the warning about venin inside Basgiath becomes a confirmed attack. Venin kill overflow patients in the Healer Quadrant tunnel and move through the fortress with Jack Barlowe’s cell as their immediate target.

Basgiath’s wardstone is the defense’s crucial object because the mission begins as an attempt to prevent its destruction and the wards fall when the stone cracks.

Jack Barlowe is tied to a weakness exposed during the defense: after the wards fall, the defenders learn that he and other venin had already been able to survive inside Basgiath’s protections before the wardstone broke.

The hidden ward chamber is the battle’s critical interior location. Violet’s squad protects the airspace above its entrance during the fighting, and the final ward-restoration attempt happens below the college.

After the battle, Jack Barlowe remains a practical target inside Basgiath because the infiltrating venin move through the fortress with his cell as their immediate goal.
