Wardstone Chamber

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Aretia’s wardstone chamber is a hidden space built around a massive carved wardstone. It stands above Riorson House along a ridgeline.

Book II · Ch. 39

Basgiath’s ward chamber is concealed beneath the administration building and houses a wardstone about twice the size of Aretia’s.

Book II · Ch. 59

Important Events

Jack Barlowe compromises Basgiath’s ward chamber before Violet’s group reaches it, leaving the two black-uniformed guards dead outside. Inside, he kills Baide against the wardstone; her blood extinguishes the black flames, and her collapse cracks the stone.

Book II · Ch. 59

The broken Basgiath wardstone becomes the defenders’ best remaining hope instead of an abandoned loss. Violet argues that its placement over the strongest natural power flow may still matter, Brennan’s mending creates a chance to repair it physically, and the defense focuses on holding long enough to test whether the stone can hold power again.

Book II · Ch. 63

Basgiath’s ward chamber is the site of the decisive ward-raising and Lilith Sorrengail’s death. Brennan restores the stone to one piece, Violet confirms it can hold a little power, and Sloane siphons Lilith’s, Aimsir’s, and their life energies into the wardstone as dragonfire from six dragons and Andarna completes the raising of the wards.

Book II · Ch. 65

Violet orchestrates an illegal alteration of Navarre’s wardstone as a treasonous contingency plan for the alliance. Sawyer uses metallurgy on the iron wardstone while Mira guides the process, Maren’s successful wielding proves the intended change worked, and Violet later claims sole responsibility before the Senarium.

Book III · Ch. 8

Location and Access

Aretia’s wardstone chamber lies above Riorson House, reached by a ridgeline path with somber guards and a man-made open-sky canyon lit by mage lights. Masking runes hide the chamber from overhead view.

Book II · Ch. 39

Basgiath’s ward chamber is hidden beneath the administration building. Access runs through a camouflaged stone door at the base of a turret stairwell, a cramped tunnel, and a glowing blue archway.

Book II · Ch. 59

After Basgiath’s wardstone is broken, its hidden entrance hundreds of feet below the ridgeline becomes a guarded strategic point. Violet’s squad covers the airspace above the stretch between main campus and the ridge while Brennan works below.

Book II · Ch. 61

By the time Violet’s group returns to alter Basgiath’s wardstone, the approach includes guarded stairs and a narrow passage.

Book III · Ch. 7

Layout and Features

Aretia’s chamber is large enough to fit ten dragons and holds the massive carved wardstone at its center. Its open-sky design leaves the space exposed to the air while the masking runes protect it from discovery above.

Book II · Ch. 39

The open top of Aretia’s chamber serves the wardstone mechanism: dragons can position themselves around the rim and breathe fire down onto the stone. The imbued wardstone sits a hundred feet below, where dragonfire can trigger its embedded runes.

Book II · Ch. 56

Basgiath’s ward chamber houses a wardstone about twice the size of Aretia’s in a correspondingly larger space. The stone is carved with rings and runes interrupted by a diamond pattern, and before Baide’s blood extinguishes it, black flames burn from it with a bone-deep hum.

Book II · Ch. 59

After Basgiath’s wards are restored, Navarre’s wardstone is visible as a massive iron pillar with eerie black flame.

Book III · Ch. 7

Function and Rules

The chamber’s core purpose is to house the wardstone from which a territory’s protective wards originate. Violet describes the wardstone as the stem of an umbrella, with the wards spreading outward in a dome and weakening near the outer ground edge.

Book II · Ch. 39

Aretia’s chamber functions as the practical worksite for solving the wardstone problem. Violet and Dain use it for repeated translation sessions with Warrick’s journal, and Xaden sometimes joins them there to help imbue the stone.

Book II · Ch. 51

Raising wards requires more than placing power into the stone: the chamber is built so dragons can fire into the wardstone from above and activate the runes.

Book II · Ch. 56

After Violet’s midnight alteration of Navarre’s wardstone, the wards still protect against dark wielders while the restriction that kept gryphon fliers from wielding under Navarre’s protections has been changed.

Book III · Ch. 8

Residents and Affiliations

Violet and Dain become the chamber’s regular working pair during the Aretian ward effort, meeting there at noon while also working late in the library. Xaden’s occasional presence connects the site to the practical task of imbuing the wardstone, not just translating the journals.

Book II · Ch. 51

Once Basgiath’s wardstone becomes a wartime target, Violet’s squad covers the airspace above the hidden entrance while Marbh helps protect the area during the battle. Later, Tairn warns the riders guarding the wardstone during an internal venin breach.
