Overview
First Wing is one of the Riders Quadrant wings at Basgiath. It receives cadets during formation assignments and operates as a separate wing from Violet Sorrengail’s Fourth Wing.
In Aretia’s merged wartime structure, First Wing is associated with fliers as well as dragon riders.
Purpose or Ideology
First Wing’s public posture at Basgiath is strongly loyalist toward Navarre. During the courtyard confrontation, its riders cheer claims of loyalty, and Iris Drue declares that First Wing stands strong and loyal.
Structure and Leadership
Nyra heads First Wing as senior wingleader of the quadrant. The wing is divided into sections and squads, including Flame Section and third squads sent together to the sparring gym.
First Wing can receive newly surviving cadets after the parapet, but assignments are not always final. Sloane Mairi is first placed in First Wing before Dain has the roll corrected to move her into Second Squad, Flame Section, Fourth Wing.
Notable Members
Jack Barlowe is assigned to Flame Section of First Wing during formation.
Caroline Ashton is attached to Jack’s old First Wing squad and escorts him back to it when he is publicly welcomed back. First Wing gives the loudest cheers at his return.
Iris Drue speaks for First Wing during the courtyard crisis, declaring the wing’s loyalty while its riders press for a challenge.
Caroline Ashton and Loran Yashil are among the First Wing students who participate in Signet Sparring opposite Violet’s squad. Caroline also represents First Wing in a paired attempt against Garrick with a fire wielder.
Relationships and Rivals
First Wing is Fourth Wing’s first War Games opponent, defending a mountain practice fort and its crystal egg against Violet’s group. Fourth Wing’s victory leaves First Wing angry after the objective is lost and the tower is demolished by Violet’s lightning.
After the battle at Basgiath, First Wing is hostile toward Violet’s group and toward the fliers inside the college. Its second-years glare in the dormitory, and a run-in between First Wing and two third-year fliers near the great hall leaves everyone bloody.
First Wing is the Navarrian faction driving the courtyard confrontation with Aretian riders and fliers. Its riders help hold the opposing side back, chant for a challenge, and lose momentum only after Violet’s public argument and professor authority bring weapons down.
Activities
First Wing takes part in Riders Quadrant combat training. Its third squads are sent to the sparring gym during Violet's assessment session.
Later, Jack Barlowe appears as First Wing's challenger against Violet in the January sparring-gym challenge rotation.
First Wing is positioned between the Aretian cadets and the gathered drifts in the field west of Draithus before the ascent begins, as part of the organized rider-flier staging for the Medaro Pass mission.
Before the battle, First Wing is sent with Second Wing to the edge of the Vale and is assigned to defend it under the current battle plan.
First Wing students also appear in the first Signet Sparring session opposite Violet's squad, with Caroline Ashton and Loran Yashil among the participants Xaden defeats.
First Wing continues in Signet Sparring opposite Second Squad. After Second Squad's coordinated attack, Caroline Ashton and a fire wielder make a paired attempt against Garrick and are thrown backward.
Reputation
Among Violet’s squad, First Wing has a hostile and cowardly reputation after the battle. Rhiannon recently defends the squad’s table by telling First Wing riders to go back to their own section.
First Wing is regarded as a threat to Basgiath’s fragile coexistence with the fliers. Xaden identifies the bloody great-hall run-in as part of the problem of keeping fliers safe, and the courtyard crisis confirms First Wing as the loudest faction pressing the conflict.
