Overview

Second Wing is one of the wings in Basgiath’s Riders Quadrant. Violet Sorrengail’s squad is originally assigned to it before Xaden Riorson has the squad moved to Fourth Wing so he can have direct access to her.

Book I · Ch. 4

Purpose or Ideology

Second Wing’s practical function is to organize riders into squads and sections for the quadrant’s training, competition, and command structure. Its cadets appear in squad assignments, section-level rivalries, and supervised sparring alongside the other wings.

Book III · Ch. 28

Structure and Leadership

Second Wing has a Tail Section with its own squads, including one known for running the icy Gauntlet quickly enough to be treated as a serious Squad Battle threat.

Book I · Ch. 24

Timin Kagiso is promoted to Second Wing wingleader after Aura Beinhaven’s death. Second Wing squads continue practicing in the amphitheater under Carr’s supervision.

Book III · Ch. 28

Notable Members

Mushin Vedie represents Second Wing among the first-years. His death shocks Violet because he had been rumored to be one of the strongest cadets in their year.

Aura Beinhaven is singled out as instrumental in Second Wing’s War Games victory.

Activities

Second Wing cadets take part in the Riders Quadrant’s competitive challenges and squad contests. Violet earns a dagger after defeating a Second Wing girl in a January challenge, and one Second Wing Tail Section squad is treated as dangerous competition for Squad Battle because of its Gauntlet speed.

Second Wing is publicly credited with winning War Games.

Book II · Ch. 4

During the defense of Basgiath, Second Wing is assigned with First Wing to defend the Vale while Violet’s squad protects the ward-chamber airspace.

Book II · Ch. 63

Reputation

After Basgiath begins integrating captured fliers and rider cadets against the venin threat, Second Wing is visible in the factional hostility around the change. A Second Wing rider threatens Cat with a challenge, and another Second Wing voice questions whether waiting to die later is any better than dying immediately, prompting Emetterio to redirect the crowd toward fighting the common enemy.
