At Aretia, Third Wing is pulled into the tense integration of riders and gryphon fliers. A Third Wing rider voices suspicion that fliers may push riders off a cliff during the ascent, and Brennan uses the fear to insist that riders and fliers climb together to build trust.

The hostility is not only verbal: a brawl involving Third Wing and two drifts leaves more than a dozen cadets bruised and contributes to an instructor crackdown.
