Infantry

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Infantry are Navarre's ground military forces, separate from the Riders Quadrant and recognizable among cadets and officers by navy-blue uniforms. Companies serve at military outposts such as Montserrat, where infantry facilities include a stable, blacksmith, and armory as part of the fortress defenses.

Book I · Ch. 31

Purpose or Ideology

Infantry garrison fortified outposts and support their defensive setup alongside stationed riders.

Book I · Ch. 26

At Basgiath, infantry serve as a fragile ground defense while riders and dragons fight wyvern overhead, with soldiers posted through courtyards, hallways, and entrances.

Book II · Ch. 61

In Aretia's emergency defense, infantry are ordered to take their posts and kill wyvern that riders force down to the ground.

Book III · Ch. 51

Structure and Leadership

Infantry units are organized into companies, platoons, and squads. Mission planning can assign infantry cadets specific support roles, including acting as healers' aides, and officer service in the infantry can be limited to an agreed number of years rather than the lifelong obligation associated with riders.

Book II · Ch. 16

Outpost staffing changes by company-sized deployments; Montserrat exceeds its ordinary capacity when another infantry company is moved there.

Book II · Ch. 17

Relationships and Rivals

Navarre's infantry are implicated in frequent, unreported killings of Poromish civilians trying to cross the border. Violet identifies the attackers as Navarre's own infantry and treats the incident at Samara as true even though Basgiath's Battle Brief does not report it.

Book II · Ch. 23

Activities

Infantry cadets train in field conditions that include camping and practicing how to make and break camp, even in winter snow.

Book I · Ch. 25

Land navigation, map reading, and elevation-line interpretation are treated as skills associated with infantry work.

Book II · Ch. 11

At Samara, infantry routines include guard duty, platoon formations, and company runs through the fortress grounds.

Book II · Ch. 20

Reputation

Basgiath's military instruction values riders far above infantry in battlefield terms: Devera says a full infantry company is needed to compensate for the loss of a single rider.

Book I · Ch. 31

During Basgiath's battle, Cat reports that infantry are suffering the heaviest casualties so far, and wounded infantry crowd the infirmary area with burns.
