Zihnal

Only showing what’s been revealed up to your current progress. Future events, identities, and relationships are hidden.

Overview

Zihnal is the god of luck, invoked when Violet wants fortune before a dangerous Gauntlet attempt.

Book I · Ch. 10

Favoring Zihnal has broad appeal because everyone needs luck, giving him a practical reach beyond narrower virtues such as wisdom or loyalty.

Book III · Ch. 8

In Zehyllna, Zihnal is treated as the God of Luck whose rules govern the party's formal encounter and the fortune or loss presented through its gift test.

Book III · Ch. 38

Personality and Behavior

Raegan's saying about Zihnal presents him as a god who gives what he sees fit, even when fortune arrives mixed with hardship.

Book III · Ch. 61

Relationships

Violet prays to Zihnal during the Gauntlet, first before beginning and again before attempting a sideways rope tactic at the chimney formation. Her appeals treat him as a possible source of luck when skill and timing may not be enough.

Book I · Ch. 11

After Trager and Silaraine die from Zehyllna's gift ritual, Violet privately says she is not sure she will ever pray to Zihnal again. The lethal cost of accepting his fortune leaves her angry and disillusioned with luck.

Book III · Ch. 40

Abilities and Skills

Rhiannon invokes Zihnal after Liam narrowly survives, saying the god of luck must love him because he cheated death twice that day.

Book I · Ch. 29

During the escape, Aaric tells Violet that Zihnal may love her but they should not test him, framing their successful retrieval and narrow timing as luck that could still fail if they delay.

Book II · Ch. 33

Zihnal is also credited for ordinary luck rather than only battlefield survival. Heaton invokes him after winning at cards, Ridoc prefers him because luck can help in any situation, and Violet thanks him when a lock opens without destroying the book she needs.

Book III · Ch. 18

Important Events

Zehyllna's gift ritual is conducted under Zihnal's rules, with guests expected to accept whatever fortune or loss the test presents. Trager's death during the ritual darkens that association, and the chapter's framing treats the absence of luck as preferable to the fortune Zehyllna forces on its guests.
