Overview
Crux are enormous eagle-like predator-monsters feared across Calandra as creations of the Six. Their migrations black out the skies for months, destroy settlements and crops, slaughter livestock and people, and threaten every kingdom without distinction.
The creatures Nelfinex calls swifts are the same species Calandra calls crux. In Nelfinex they are beloved as the favored Starling form, while in Calandra they are known for generational migrations that kill living beings in their path.
Brother Nold says crux did not migrate to Calandra before the Voster arrived. Caspia believes the Starling ancestors' journey and lingering Calandran magic may have changed Nelfinex swifts into murderous crux, but the exact mechanism remains unconfirmed.
Appearance
Crux are immense, eagle-like creatures with powerful beaks, blood-dripping horns, and talons sharp enough to sever or pierce human bodies.
The crux seen at Ellder has black feathers, wing spikes, massive talons, and a sword-sharp beak.
As swifts in Nelfinex, the species can grow to roughly half the size of a ship. Females have black feathers, while males have rich red feathers.
The male crux in Roslo's gallery bears Bisten's auburn feathers, scars, chipped beak, and horns, confirming that the Calandran crux in the artwork physically match a known Nelfinex swift.
Abilities and Behavior
Crux can scent people through insufficient underground shelters and rip through earth to reach them. Ashmore's earlier shelters failed for this reason, leading the town to rebuild deeper and stronger defenses.
The Guardian says the Voster have ruled out the crux as Lyssa's origin because the last migration was nearly thirty years earlier and Lyssa has been known for only about four years. He still warns that an infected crux could carry Lyssa across Calandra within a week, making infection among the species an urgent danger before the next migration.
Migration hordes are too numerous for ordinary defenses to defeat, even with flamethrowers, catapults, and large crossbows. Solitary scout crux usually appear one or two months before the main horde, and people who survive by sheltering may still face starvation, sickness, mold, and poor air during the long confinement.
A crux can tear through gates and roofs, resist arrows, carry soldiers or other people into the air, choose targets from above, and make movement through open streets nearly impossible. Its wingbeats can shake the ground and generate violent wind.
In Nelfinex, swifts leave once every thirty summers to breed across the Marixmore Ocean and return to lay their eggs. Their breeding grounds are unknown, and following the flock is forbidden.
Among Starlings, the swift form is commonly chosen because the creatures are considered massive, gentle, affectionate, intelligent, and stronger than any other creature. The first transformation into such a large body is especially painful, though the pain is said to lessen with repeated shifts.
Lore says Sonnet survived ninety days during a crux migration by telling stories to the creatures until they left Calandra. Faxon presents this as lore rather than confirmed fact, so the tale does not establish that stories reliably influence crux behavior.
Caspia argues that swifts from Nelfinex become monsters when they migrate to Calandra, unlike the creatures at home. She treats the change as part of a possible Calandran curse, but Hain does not confirm whether the ancient magicians, the continent itself, or some other force is responsible.
Ransom clarifies that the Ellder creature's humanlike corpse does not prove that all crux are shapeshifters. He believes that one creature merely took the form of a woman after death, and he is not certain it was a migration scout.
Habitat
In Nelfinex, swifts inhabit rocky mountains and hunt large elk and goats. Most live wild, while selected strong and intelligent birds are kept in the palace mews for the Starling family.
The species crosses the Marixmore Ocean during its breeding cycle and migrates into Calandra once every generation. Calandra knows that arrival as the crux migration.
According to Brother Nold, the species was not migrating to Calandra before the Voster arrived there. Caspia infers that the Voster and Starling ancestors may have altered the migration route or established a Calandran breeding ground, but this remains an inference.
Known Individuals
Bisten is a male swift from Nelfinex whose distinctive scars, chipped beak, auburn feathers, and horns appear in Roslo's crux gallery. Caspia's recognition of him links a known Nelfinex swift to Calandra's crux imagery.
Brother Nold describes a third Starling ancestor who left the Voster as a swift after losing the ability to return to human form and killing humans for months. Caspia infers that this permanently transformed swift may have been the catalyst for the crux presence in Calandra, though the explanation is not confirmed.
Encounters
A crux migration destroyed Perris three generations earlier, forcing Turah's king to abandon the ruined castle and establish the hidden mountain stronghold of Allesaria. Perris's fall helped make Turah secretive and difficult for foreign rulers to reach.
During Ashmore's previous migration, crux found people hidden in shelters that were too shallow and poorly reinforced. They tore through the ground and killed everyone below.
The previous migration killed Cathlin's family and Luella's family. Cathlin describes the migration as an experience that changes everyone who survives it.
A crux appears at Ellder far earlier than the expected spring migration and attacks the fortress directly. The female creature lands in the courtyard, kills Luella, damages gates and roofs, carries soldiers into the air, and turns the fortress into an evacuation crisis.
Ransom kills the Ellder crux by driving his sword through its chest and heart while it carries him into the sky. Its corpse appears as a human body rather than an ordinary crux body, something Cathlin has never heard of.
Ransom believes the female crux carried him upward intending to drop him. He says the creature absorbed most of the impact when they fell, allowing him to survive, but the reason it left a humanlike corpse remains unknown.
Roslo's crux gallery preserves violent images of the species severing, crushing, tearing, and puncturing people during migrations. Andreas says defenders can kill some crux only to delay the slaughter and help others reach shelter, not to defeat the migration outright.
Margot remembers leaving shelter after a past migration to find Quentis streets filled with rubble and wreckage, with many houses destroyed. Her mother's death at a looter's hands shows that danger continued even after the crux had passed.
Odessa and her father agree that destroying the magical orbits might stop the crux and remove magic from Calandra, though neither knows whether the plan will work. The coming migration is still the practical reason he wanted access to Allesaria and to Odessa's Starling ability.
