Overview
Quentis is the kingdom ruled by Odessa's father, with its royal family based in the coastal capital of Roslo. Odessa is a princess of Quentis, though her place in the royal hierarchy leaves her feeling like the wrong princess beside Mae.
The kingdom is under rising economic and political strain because marroweel attacks have made successful voyages rare. Its grain shipments to Laine, Genesis, Ozarth, and Turah are necessary to avoid treaty disputes and possible war, while Quentis also needs to gather food, weapons, lumber, and other supplies before the expected crux migration.
Odessa identifies Quentis as her home kingdom and names herself a Quentin princess. The realm is ruled by her father, the Gold King.
When Odessa returns to Quentis with Ransom, Evangeline, Faze, and their escorts, the kingdom offers the royal resources she has been seeking, especially access to her father's healers. That help comes under King Cross's authority and does not make the royal household feel safe or welcoming to her.
Quentis no longer functions as a reliable refuge for Odessa's household once its authorities arrest Ransom, plan to exile him, and intend to keep Odessa after his banishment. Its healers and royal resources still matter, but remaining in the kingdom becomes dangerous for the people Odessa is trying to protect.
Important Events
Quentis's royal court receives the Turan rangers, Prince Zavier, the Guardian, and two Voster priests in the throne room. The kingdom is paying the rangers in Calandran gold and silver for killing marroweels, but the meeting changes the marriage arrangement when the Guardian declares that Prince Zavier must marry Odessa rather than Mae.
The Gold King has secretly staged ship disappearances and is planning an operation against Allesaria in hopes of finding a way to stop the coming danger. This makes Quentis's public maritime crisis part of a hidden political and military scheme.
Odessa leaves Quentis by sea with the Turans at dawn. As the ship pulls away, Roslo, the golden castle, her family, and the familiar cliffs recede until only water remains, separating her from her home and former royal life.
Odessa fears that Lyssa could travel from the infected Krisenth to Quentis and urges the Guardian to warn her father. She concludes that the Gold King already knows about the infection, though the Guardian cannot confirm whether it has crossed into Quentis.
Ransom says Odessa's father is preparing or planning an invasion of Turah. The threat makes Quentis's conflict with Turah more immediate than a dispute over Allesaria alone.
Quentis becomes Odessa's intended destination if Ransom leaves Turah and the others do not return. She plans to use her father's wealth and vaults, seek healers across the realm, investigate her maternal heritage, and bring Luella's hidden books there if necessary.
During the crux crisis at Ellder, Quentis remains the refuge Odessa may need to reach with Evangeline if Ransom does not rejoin them. The kingdom is not reached, but it stands as her possible destination after escape from Turah.
The Mavins make Quentis Odessa and Evangeline's contracted destination, agreeing to escort them there for one thousand zillahs per Mavin payable on arrival in Roslo. Odessa has no money for an up-front payment and refuses to surrender either Ransom's sword or Faze, leaving the payment unresolved while the route becomes more concrete.
Caspia, Andreas, and Kos sail for Quentis after Caspia asks to go with Andreas rather than let him return there alone. Andreas plans to bring Caspia to Roslo and use the castle library in the hope of finding answers about Kenn, previous Starling encounters, and Xandra.
Odessa reaches Quentis with Ransom, Evangeline, Faze, Thora, Jodhi, Brother Dime, and their horses after the voyage from Genesis. Roslo's gold-plated castle shines above the bay, but the city looks quiet to Odessa and does not visibly appear ready for the approaching crux migration.
Margot describes Quentis as having borne the brunt of a past crux migration. Its streets were filled with rubble and wreckage, and every other house was reportedly destroyed, though Margot's childhood home survived.
The attempted abduction of Faze and the assault on Odessa and Mae turn the royal grounds into a direct threat to Odessa's household. Quentis authorities arrest Ransom in the barracks, plan to exile him, and intend to keep Odessa in the kingdom.
Quentis receives a new king when Andreas assumes the crown after his father's grief-driven decline. The kingdom is shocked and devastated by Malynn's death, while Caspia's household conceals her green blood and the birth of her daughter from the public.
The Quentis throne room becomes the place where Odessa and her father compare their accounts of Caspia's life and death. Their discussion also brings two hidden orbits into focus: one in the kingdom's vaults and another beneath the infirmary crypts.
Odessa returns to the Quentis castle library for the first time since childhood and receives Caspia's final hidden journal in a private carrel. The same castle also houses the infirmary where Alore tests Odessa's saliva and the royal suite where Ransom, Cathlin, Zavier, and Evangeline sleep.
Location and Access
Quentis is the smallest and southernmost kingdom in Calandra. The Marixmore Ocean borders it on three sides, while the Evon Ravine separates its eastern side from Genesis; because overland routes are dangerous, trade and travel commonly move by sea.
The kingdom has only one land border, with Genesis across the Evon Ravine. Its coastal position and wealth support naval ambitions large enough for Odessa to think of a navy unlike any Calandra has seen.
One overland route toward Quentis leads through Norcrest, across the Harrow, through the bogs, and onward through Laine and Genesis before the Evon Ravine. Odessa treats the route as difficult and dangerous enough that ship passage across the Krisenth would be preferable if she could obtain it.
The Mavins avoid sailing directly to the Quentin coast when the crux migration may begin, fearing they could be trapped at sea. Their safer plan is to enter Quentis by way of the Evon Ravine, a route Odessa has never traveled.
Quentis can also be reached by hiring passage from the Genesis coast to Roslo. Odessa's party uses that sea route and arrives in Roslo's bay with their horses after Ransom secures a fishing crew for the crossing.
Layout and Features
The royal castle includes a sanctuary meant to shelter Quentis's royal family during the crux migration. Rooms near the sanctuary are reserved for Odessa's father and his family.
Roslo is Quentis's coastal capital and the seat of its royal family. From the water, the city is visible as a white coastal city with a golden castle and cliffs familiar to Odessa from her life there.
Quentis has settled countryside where farms, buildings, and towns can be seen during carriage travel. Its soil is associated with grain-growing, in contrast to Turah's harsher conditions.
Quentis does not use dungeon confinement in the same way Ellder does. Criminals are kept in a camp near the Evon Ravine or held temporarily in barracks cells before transport.
Andreas describes Quentis as a country of broad wheat and grain fields like a golden sea, with coastal cities where the ocean can be heard from open windows and the air carries salt, sand, and spices. His attachment to the country gives Caspia a first picture of Quentis as both agricultural and maritime.
Roslo's royal castle contains an immense library that Andreas believes could take more than two lifetimes for one person to read. He and Caspia hope its collection may hold information about Kenn, previous Starling encounters, or a way to help Xandra return home.
The Quentis castle displays the kingdom's wealth through gold plating, gilded pillars, stained glass, fountains, manicured grounds, and the Quentin flag. Its grandeur is public-facing, with visitors moving through the busy royal grounds.
The castle training center is large and active, with space for sparring guards, an indoor archery range, weapons instruction, legionnaires, and children training under supervision. It is also tightly controlled by the royal household, which can clear the room, permit children into it, and restrain Faze there.
Andreas's family vault in Quentis contains a locked and sealed chamber that can conceal a recovered magical orbit from Caspia's senses when the orbit is isolated from water and kept at enough distance. Andreas controls the chamber with its only brass key and means to keep it secret from everyone except himself and Caspia.
The Quentis royal complex holds two hidden magical orbits: one in the kingdom's vaults and another beneath the infirmary crypts. Both are isolated enough that Odessa cannot feel their magic from the throne room.
The castle library remains a vast and prestigious repository with a central atrium, gilded doors, scholars' desks, multiple floors, and hidden spaces. Caspia's writings were preserved there, and Faxon still serves as head librarian when Odessa returns to the library as an adult.
Function and Rules
Quentis's dynastic and treaty arrangements are thrown into conflict when Odessa, rather than Mae, is claimed as Prince Zavier's bride. The Guardian declares that Prince Zavier must marry Odessa, and the Chain of Sevens imposes a separate bride-prize obligation that overrides Odessa's father's preferred arrangement.
The kingdom relies on the Shield of Sparrows for resources from the other kingdoms, including iron from Ozarth, lumber from Turah, spices and gold from Laine, and oil from Genesis. Odessa's father says the treaty has kept the five kingdoms from war and helped them survive nine migrations, leaving Quentis unable to risk angering Turah by refusing the bride prize.
Quentis provides soldiers with shelter and food in exchange for service. Its postal system is less extensive than Turah's pony-rider network, using wagons on regular routes instead.
Quentis's usual response to monsters is to kill them, unlike Treow's practice of trapping and relocating nonaggressive creatures. Odessa begins to recognize that this approach can disturb the wider chains connecting monsters, animals, and human settlements.
Quentin children are taught the capitals of every kingdom, including Allesaria. That education is one reason Odessa treats Allesaria as real even when Turans avoid discussing it.
Quentis prepares for the expected danger with fortified defenses, including catapults and large crossbow bolts forged for castle towers and walls. Odessa remembers that thousands died in Roslo during the last such event despite the city's walls and keeps.
Quentis provides Odessa access to her father's healers, making the kingdom a practical resource in the search for a cure despite his cold reception and her doubts about remaining in Quentis.
As the early crux threat becomes harder to ignore, the castle begins visible emergency preparations. Visitors, noblemen, city officials, legionnaires, and guards fill the royal complex, and the number of armed personnel rises sharply.
Quentis's royal social order is highly formal and appearance-conscious. Dinners, parties, galas, invitations, newspaper sketches, and public etiquette all shape how noble families are judged, placing Caspia under pressure to perform the customs expected of a woman married into the ruling household.
Quentis's ruler is bound by treaties with the Voster after Andreas assumes the crown. Those blood-bound obligations constrain the king and delay Andreas and Caspia's search for the remaining magical orbits.
Residents and Affiliations
Quentins such as Brielle and Jocelyn are treated as outsiders aboard the ship from Turah, while Odessa's treaty marriage places her closer to the Turah side. Their Quentin identity remains visible in the way they are protected and kept out of the crew's way during danger.
Samuel Hay's book gives Quentis a hostile reputation in Turah, portraying it as a country of thieves and traitors and calling Roslo immoral. Odessa treats the book as an attack on her kingdom, home, and people.
Samuel admits that his accusations against Quentis were based on an unverified rumor and regrets the damage his book caused to the kingdom's reputation. His own family had traded between Quentis and Genesis through the Evon Ravine before he and Emsley left Quentis together.
Stories of the Guardian's monster slaying reached Quentis through royal circles. Banner is also known there as the kingdom's best-known fighter for throwing-knife skill.
Quentin soldiers are recognizable by the crossbow-and-wheat emblem, and Banner wears Quentis's teal uniform. Ramsey's force at Ellder includes Quentin troops after he bargains with the Gold King and Banner to send Odessa back to Quentis.
Quentis's ruling household includes Andreas's estranged father, whose wealth and court culture Andreas connects to Arick's addiction and death.
The Quentis royal court has priests who can serve as emissaries to the king and may possess knowledge or abilities relevant to Caspia's condition.
Quentis has a new general, and King Cross is receiving urgent information about the early crux threat and Lyssa.
Quentis's royal household manages Odessa's clothing, family associations, and access to information while she is in the castle. Her father's authority also reaches into the suppression of her deceased mother's history.
Some Quentis guards within the royal establishment are willing to use their access to endanger Odessa's household. Nine guards attack Odessa and Mae in the castle gardens, try to take or sell Faze, and use the grounds' wind and darkness to hide the assault from the castle interior.
