Overview
The Shield of Sparrows preserves peace among the five kingdoms through royal marriages, trade obligations, and restrictions against invasion.
Calandra is a continent made up of Genesis, Quentis, Turah, Laine, and Ozarth. Andreas has never known of Kenn or any continent beyond it, making Caspia’s arrival from across the ocean extraordinary within Calandran knowledge.
Caspia develops the theory that ancient magic sealed in glass orbits may have altered Calandra, including its migrations and other dangerous changes. She and Andreas treat the orbits as a possible source of the dark magic affecting the continent, though the theory and its consequences remain unconfirmed.
Important Events
Calandra’s history includes the crux’s last migration nearly thirty years ago, and its five kingdoms are joined by magical treaties.
The early crux sighting and attack at Ellder show that the expected migration timetable may be dangerously wrong. The creature brings immediate destruction to a populated settlement, killing residents, destroying buildings, blocking routes, and threatening anyone exposed in the streets.
After a crux migration left Calandra in ruins and generations of war still threatened the continent, the five kings created a treaty meant to bind the kingdoms together so they could rebuild, trade, and survive collectively.
Caspia discovers that Calandra’s crux are the same creatures Nelfinex calls swifts. The connection recasts the continent’s migrations as a threat involving the same shapeshifting form favored by that bloodline.
Lyssa is spreading through monsters across Calandra, making it a threat to the entire continent rather than only to Turah or Quentis. Odessa seeks Quentis’s healers for a cure that could protect Calandra as well as Ransom.
Caspia’s research uncovers a gap in Calandra’s written history: records appear to begin with the first migration three hundred summers ago despite careful later recordkeeping. She considers whether earlier history was destroyed by migrations or deliberately erased.
Location and Access
Quentis is Calandra’s smallest and southernmost kingdom, bordered by the Marixmore Ocean on three sides and by the Evon Ravine along its eastern border with Genesis. Turah is the largest and northernmost kingdom and is most feasibly reached from Quentis by the Krisenth Crossing.
The Cirrina reaches a coast across the Marixmore Ocean that is mostly sheer rocky cliffs, with one sandy landing place, green hills, a fresh stream, and no visible people, towns, cities, or roads.
Andreas identifies the continent reached beyond the Marixmore Ocean as Calandra, and his hunting cabin is located there.
The continent is difficult for most sailors to find because it is small compared with Kenn and can be missed through navigational error. Brother Nold says the Voster reached Calandra after fleeing wars in Kenn, which places Calandra within reach of ocean passage but outside ordinary contact.
The Evon Ravine is a sea-to-sea chasm extending from the Krisenth Crossing to the Marixmore Ocean. Its bottom is uneven black obsidian, reached by steep switchbacks, and narrow enough to cross in fewer than one hundred paces despite the ravine’s great length.
Layout and Features
The Cave Ginger Bogs are the only place in Calandra where Cave Ginger is grown.
Calandra’s political map is divided among five kingdoms: Genesis, Quentis, Turah, Laine, and Ozarth.
The kingdoms exchange key resources across the continent: Ozarth supplies iron, Turah lumber, Laine spices and gold, Genesis oil, and Quentis grain and livestock.
Cities and villages maintain defenses shaped by recurring crux migrations. Quentis has underground migration chambers and cliffside tunnels, while other communities use their own defenses against the same generational threat.
The depths of the Evon Ravine contain concealed passages, a magical waterfall, a pool, and at least one glass orbit. Chiropti make the ravine’s bottom dangerous.
Function and Rules
The land marks people’s irises at birth with permanent starbursts that link them to a place. Every Quentin has an amber starburst except Odessa, whose solid-gold eyes make her visibly different from other Quentins.
The Shield of Sparrows requires royal marriages, trade obligations, and noninvasion limits among the five kingdoms. Its demands make unwilling brides part of the realm’s political peace.
Calandran starbursts have kingdom colors: amber for Quentis, green for Turah, magenta for Laine, blue for Ozarth, and persimmon for Genesis. Caspia is the first person without starbursts whom Andreas has ever seen.
Hain says the Voster’s gifts changed after they reached Calandra, giving them power over wind, water, and blood. He also says he is bound to the land by unexplained ties and wants to return to Kenn if those ties can be broken.
Father says the Kennin are magically bound to Calandra and that destroying the magical orbits might eliminate the continent’s magic and release them from those ancient bonds. The effects of removing that magic remain uncertain.
Brother Skore states that Calandra’s magic has been part of Odessa since her conception because she was born on the continent to a Calandran father. That ambient magic may affect how her Starling nature works in comparison with a Starling from Nelfinex.
Residents and Affiliations
Rumors place hundreds of Mavins across Calandra, though their exact number is unknown. Sryker describes them as owing allegiance to gold rather than to any king or kingdom.
Calandra has fewer settlements and people than Kenn and Nelfinex as Caspia understands them. Andreas explains that people often cluster in cities because cities offer greater safety from monsters.
Velvi’os-telfer survivors may have fled to Calandra after the Beesans destroyed their homeland. Caspia does not know when they arrived, how many came, or where they live.
Voster have lived in Calandra for many years, but Hain says no Voster has ever been born there.
