Evangeline’s caregiver is a graceful, slender woman with long brown hair and green eyes.

Evangeline’s caregiver knows the child’s habits well enough to anticipate where she will hide, and she answers disobedience with firm concern rather than cruelty. She also forbids Evangeline from entering the dungeon cells without an adult, treating the hidden area as dangerous as well as secret.

Cathlin remembers Luella as someone who once dreamed of becoming an alchemist, healer, and traveler. The crux migration that killed Luella’s family changed her into the more guarded and stoic caretaker Odessa knows.

Luella puts her children’s safety before escape when Ramsey’s threat draws closer. She refuses to flee with Evangeline because she will not abandon Ransom, and she hopes Evangeline can claim freedom through the forest and perhaps sailing in a way Luella did not.

Ransom’s memories give Luella a more domestic shape after her death: she cut his hair, sang to him during nightmares, taught him to waltz, loved apples, feared snakes, and sneezed around lilies. He asks Odessa to make sure Evangeline knows these things about their mother if he cannot tell her himself.

Luella is Evangeline’s tutor and day-to-day caretaker in Ellder. She calls Evangeline in for meals and lessons, tries to keep her away from courtyard violence, and panics when the child disappears after leaving Odessa’s suite.

For decades, Luella and Cathlin have been friends. Their closeness is visible when Luella joins the search for Evangeline and embraces Cathlin with the familiarity of a long-standing bond.

Ransom and Evie are both Luella's children: she was pregnant with Ransom during her first visit to Ellder, later returned with him as a baby, and now tries to protect both of them from Ramsey's reach.

Luella loved Mikhail before meeting Ramsey, but her father rejected him as an unsuitable marriage partner because he was from Ozarth.

One of Luella’s alchemists betrayed her by reporting the elixir work to Ramsey. The betrayal exposed her research to the king and helped turn her own work into a danger to her family.

Luella is Ramsey Wolfe’s wife and queen, though her heart had belonged to Mikhail before Ramsey entered her life. She says she loved Ramsey in her own way as a friend, companion, and father of her children, but Ramsey later hunts her, threatens her publicly, and tries to reclaim or punish her after finding her in Ellder.

After Luella’s death, Odessa delays telling Evangeline because the child is already surrounded by bloodshed and fear. Odessa eventually tells Evangeline that Luella is dead and that her soul is in the shades.

Luella had enough regard for Thora to ask Ransom to show mercy to the snow-white-haired Mavin if he ever fought her. She also agreed without questions when Cathlin asked her to pay Thora’s debt, although Thora refused the offer.

Luella spent years studying alchemy and led a small team that worked with traces of monster-associated magic. Their potions and tonics used ingredients linked to monsters, and one formulation appeared to make people less susceptible to illness.

The completed elixir helped a dying patient with a rotting grizzur wound survive, and ten people took it without developing Lyssa. Luella secretly gave the same elixir to Ransom while he was unconscious after a training injury, believing it could help him survive the coming crux migration.

Luella believes Ransom’s later bite from a one-eyed bariwolf supplied the missing magical component that turned her elixir into Lyssa. In her explanation, the bite formed a bond among Ransom, the bariwolf, and the monster-derived magic, enhancing Ransom while also creating the infection that is killing him.

Luella understands enough of Ramsey’s militia experiments to identify why they are failing. She says his team is injecting men with infected monster blood, but without the bite’s necessary magical component the process kills the subjects instead of reproducing Ransom’s condition.

Alore uses Luella’s journal as the basis for reconstructing the elixir and testing how Lyssa formed. Luella’s theory gives Alore an operative hypothesis: the elixir supplied fundamental magic, while bariwolf saliva from Ransom’s bite supplied the missing piece, causing the infection to manifest differently in Ransom and in the wolf.

Evangeline’s caregiver secretly keeps books, scrolls, religious objects, medallions, carved figures, and other items in abandoned dungeon cells beneath Ellder. The concealed collection appears meant to protect forbidden or vulnerable materials from Ramsey’s soldiers and their book-burning orders.

Luella later moves the hidden collection to a migration cellar beneath her rooms. Three especially important books, including her black-leather research book, are concealed in a compartment beneath the cellar stairs.

Two recovered books preserve Luella’s practical research. One records the elixir’s ingredients, harvesting methods, preparation instructions, and the list of people injected with it; the other gathers her theories, experiments, rejected conclusions, and attempts to find a cure for Lyssa.

Luella’s journal includes a description of a pale-haired, star-tattooed warrior. Evangeline recognizes that figure when the Mavins rescue Faze.

Luella’s old-language journal contains short, dreamlike stories that can carry practical or symbolic knowledge, including remedies and the name Telvi’i-telfus, whose recognition attracts unwanted attention. Odessa keeps reading it during the journey, both for possible clues and to comfort Evangeline.

Luella leaves Ellder without telling Ransom or Zavier and returns two weeks later with a jar of Cave Ginger, an ingredient whose dark shell resembles Lyssa. Her return makes Odessa suspect that Luella knows how Lyssa began and that her protective choices for Ransom may be connected to the infection.

After confessing her role in Lyssa’s origin, Luella chooses to travel with Ransom toward Allesaria. She hopes to undo what she has done and persuade Ramsey to stop his experiments, while Ransom accepts the risk because he believes she deserves the chance to atone.

Ramsey’s soldiers drag Luella into Ellder’s courtyard after a Quentin spy’s information exposes her hiding place. Luella refuses Ransom’s order to run, saying that facing Ramsey was inevitable, and stands before the king while Cathlin and Ransom try to protect her.

During the crux attack on Ellder, Luella helps one of Ramsey’s injured soldiers toward the wall instead of escaping. The crux reaches her first and kills her, leaving Ransom horrified and Odessa grieving while Evangeline still does not know that her mother is dead.
