Overview
Evangeline is introduced as Zavier's four-year-old daughter, a secret kept from most of Turah so she can stay out of court life and royal treaty politics. She has spent most of her life between Treow and Ellder while Zavier visits when his princely duties allow.
Evangeline's concealed parentage is more dangerous than the public story suggests: she is King Ramsey Wolfe and Luella's biological daughter, Ransom's younger sister, and a Turan princess with a possible succession claim after Ransom. Zavier is not her biological father, but he has raised and loved her as his own.
In Quentis, Evangeline is reunited with Zavier after believing he died at Ellder. She runs to him calling him Papa, sobs in his arms, and sleeps peacefully in his lap once he is alive and present.
Appearance
Evangeline is a small girl of about four or five, with brown hair and large gray eyes.
Blue starbursts in Evangeline's eyes connect her appearance to Ozarth rather than Turah.
Personality and Behavior
Evangeline is energetic, curious, mischievous, and quick to explore places adults would rather keep hidden. She changes games to suit herself, slips away from lessons, finds hidden rooms, steals treats, and treats Ellder's secret spaces as places she can navigate.
Evangeline wants to be brave in the same way she sees Zavier and the Guardian as brave, especially by hunting monsters. Adults repeatedly redirect that courage toward staying behind, surviving danger, and obeying when a fight is too dangerous for her.
The violence at Ellder leaves Evangeline grieving, wary, and clingy in ways that contrast with her earlier boldness. She has nightmares, cries for Papa, Luella, and home, resists giving up clothing stained with Zavier's blood, but also begins to laugh, observe, and joke again during the journey with Odessa.
Relationships
Zavier is publicly treated as Evangeline's father only by the few people trusted with the secret. He shields her from court life and teaches her not to call him Papa where others can hear.
In Ellder, Evangeline grows close to Odessa, visiting her every morning and calling her Dess. She asks Odessa to accompany her when the Guardian allows a trip to Treow, treating Odessa as a trusted companion rather than a distant princess.
Evangeline is Ransom's younger sister, not his daughter, and her existence is kept hidden from King Ramsey. Ransom refuses to take her away from Zavier even though another guardian might be safer, because Zavier is her father in practice and affection.
Luella is Evangeline's mother as well as Ransom's. She wants as many days with Evangeline as she can have, sees her as fearless and suited to forests and rough land, and dreams of giving her freedom Luella did not claim for herself.
During the flight toward Quentis, Odessa becomes Evangeline's main protector and emotional anchor. Evangeline worries that Odessa's love for Ransom means Odessa can no longer be her mama, and Odessa promises that Evangeline will stay with her always.
After their reunion in the skeleton forest, Evangeline clings to Ransom after recognizing that he is real. Once they are together again, she sleeps pressed against him and refuses to let him out of her sight.
Evangeline is reunited with Zavier in Quentis after believing he died at Ellder. She runs to him calling him Papa, sobs in his arms, and sleeps peacefully in his lap once he is alive and present.
Abilities and Skills
Evangeline can read and write despite being four years old, and she understands secrecy well enough to help Odessa eavesdrop without giving herself away.
Evangeline knows Ellder's hidden spaces unusually well for a child. She can lead Odessa through concealed cave routes and dungeon cells, and she later finds the hidden escape tunnel while trying to leave the fortress with her bow and arrows.
Brother Skore teaches Evangeline a cooing, birdsong-like call that summons Faze.
Evangeline receives child-sized martial practice in Quentis, including wooden-sword work with Ransom and dagger handling under Mae's supervision.

Possessions
Evangeline accepts the surviving tarkin pup as her pet monster and gives him the name Faze. She reacts with joy rather than fear and becomes upset when she is separated from him.
Evangeline's bow from Zavier is one of her prized possessions, and she is promised training with it as she pursues her wish to become a monster hunter.
Merry is Evangeline's stuffed rabbit, which she names and keeps among her belongings.
After the Ellder attack, Sally offers to clean Merry along with Evangeline's bloodstained shirt so Evangeline can keep tangible pieces of home.

Evangeline keeps the stuffed rabbit beside her in the Quentis guest suite as a familiar comfort.
Faze remains unwilling to leave Evangeline's side, and Odessa recognizes that the surviving tarkin pup effectively belongs to Evangeline.
Important Events
Evangeline survives the tarkin attack near Treow and helps another child reach safety while Odessa and Marco are trapped on a collapsing ladder. The attack frightens her, but she also acts quickly enough to aid someone else.
During the crux attack on Ellder, Evangeline witnesses Banner attack Odessa and sees Banner's knife strike Zavier. She runs to Zavier, presses her hands to his wound, hears him say he loves her, and is carried away from his body by Odessa before escaping through the tunnel with Faze.
Evangeline's escape from Ellder leaves her physically dependent on Odessa and emotionally overwhelmed. She travels in dirty, bloodstained clothing, eats too little, suffers nightmares, and clings to Odessa while trying to hold on to the few objects and memories she still has.
In the Cave Ginger Bogs, Evangeline asks whether Luella is in the shades with her deceased father, and Odessa confirms Luella's death. Odessa also assures her that Ransom is alive and promises they will find him.
Mae's training-center confrontation cuts Evangeline's favorite Ellder nightshirt, provoking Evangeline to lunge at Mae with a dagger before collapsing into tears. When Ransom's anger becomes dangerous, Evangeline helps steady him by wrapping her fingers around his clenched hand.
