Before his name is known, the Turah spokesman appears as a tall, broad, heavily muscled man with shoulder-length chocolate-brown hair and a short beard. His eyes have solid molten-silver irises rather than the green starburst pattern typical of Turans.

The Guardian’s eyes visibly change color, shifting through green, hazel, and silver. Severe anger brings out molten silver, while calmer moments can return them toward hazel.

A crescent-shaped row of white tooth scars marks the Guardian’s forearm from the infected bariwolf bite he survived four years earlier.

When Lyssa is overtaking him in the Quentis cell, Ransom’s eyes glow silver and dark-green veins show along his collarbones.

The Guardian is a harsh instructor who trains Odessa through fear, humiliation, and exhausting physical pressure. He withholds his name, says he will never trust her, and pushes her toward real aggression while keeping enough control not to kill her.

The Guardian treats memory and loyalty as obligations. The carvings on his grizzur-leather cuff record lives he has taken so he will not forget them, and he describes loyalty to Turah and its people as something that runs to the bone.

The Guardian regards his supernatural changes as a curse rather than a gift. He believes Lyssa is eroding his control through bloodlust and says the struggle to restrain himself is becoming harder.

Ransom defines his loyalty by protection rather than title. Whether people call him prince or Guardian, he says he protects Turah from monsters with claws and monsters with crowns.

Banner loathes the Turah guest because Banner says he killed Banner’s brother after a fight over a woman in Turah. Banner vows revenge, but the royal meeting requires him to welcome the guest.

Cathlin tells Odessa that the Guardian is sworn to protect her, a commitment Odessa did not know he had made.

The Guardian is unusually gentle with Evangeline. He comforts her when she is distressed, rides with her before him on Aurinda, and allows her to tell Odessa that she is a princess and that Zavier is her father while ordering the secret kept from others.

Ransom insists that Odessa is his wife, the Sparrow, and Turah’s future queen because he spoke the marriage oath and supplied his own blood for it. Odessa rejects the deception at first, accusing him of using and lying to her even as he claims he always regarded her as his queen.

Evangeline is Ransom’s sister, not his daughter. Ransom protects her bond with Dray as the man she knows as Zavier, and he wants her to have a choice about court life that he and Odessa were denied.

Ransom and Odessa choose each other privately after he offers to send her back to Roslo and she chooses to stay. They reconcile, consummate their marriage, and continue to treat the marriage as real while publicly maintaining the appearance that Odessa is Zavier’s wife.

Ransom’s mother is Luella, whom he hid after Ramsey tried to kill her and brought back because she wanted to remain with him. When Luella reveals her role in the elixir that helped create Lyssa, Ransom condemns her as his mother and leaves in anguish.

Before Ransom’s departure, he asks Odessa to protect Evangeline if he cannot return, and Odessa agrees.

Ransom openly opposes King Ramsey when Ramsey tries to remove Odessa from Ellder. Ramsey is Ransom’s father, and Ransom threatens to kill him after Ramsey attacks Odessa.

Ransom calls Odessa his wife and leaves Ellder to find her after she flees to the dungeon with Evangeline and Faze, leaving their separation unresolved.

While separated from him, Odessa tells Evangeline that Ransom, not the public Zavier, is her true husband. She keeps the relationship secret because she is publicly known as the Sparrow married to the crown prince while Ransom is publicly known as the Guardian.

Ransom finds Odessa in the skeleton forest, kills bariwolves during the rescue, and reunites with her as her husband in front of the Mavins. He carries Evangeline after the reunion and comforts Odessa as she grieves Freya.

After the skeleton-forest rescue, Ransom and Odessa plan to remain together and travel by boat to Roslo. Ransom tells her they must stay together no matter what as they face the migration.

Aboard the ship, Ransom returns Odessa’s knives, says he trusts her with the cuff and with difficult choices, and calls her his queen. Their renewed intimacy is interrupted when Jodhi reports an approaching ship.

In Roslo, Ransom proposes leaving Odessa and Evangeline in Perris while he goes to Allesaria, but Odessa refuses the separation. They reaffirm that their strength and survival depend on staying together and spend the night as spouses.

Ransom’s Lyssa-driven nightmare briefly turns him against Odessa while he is unconscious, but her voice brings him back. He checks that he has not injured her and considers sleeping apart to protect her, while Odessa insists that they remain together.

After Ransom’s rage frightens him at the training center, Odessa reconnects their matching scars and tells him that she trusts him. Evangeline’s touch helps him relax, and he embraces both of them while saying he wants to go home with them.

Odessa’s disclosure about the Voster priests, Luella’s journal, and the waterfall caves prompts Ransom to contact the Voster High Priest through a sealed message.

Odessa’s father acknowledges Ransom as Odessa’s husband and says he appreciates Ransom’s loyalty to her despite not trusting him. Odessa refuses to keep the revelations about the orbits, the Kennin, and the Voster from Ransom.

At the cliff, Ransom anchors Odessa with his arms and leads her away from the edge. He agrees that they can face the coming danger only by trying together, and he and Odessa exchange declarations of love.

Odessa’s father considers the Guardian’s powers important enough to order her to investigate them and kill him if she gets the opportunity. Spies sent to Turah have failed to learn the extent or source of those powers, and rumors describe him as fast as a viper and strong as ten men.

The Guardian demonstrates inhuman-seeming speed and endurance at sea by swinging over the rail of the moving Cutter, swimming rapidly to another ship, and climbing aboard before Odessa can track where he has gone. The crew treats the feat as ordinary for him.

During an attack by a sea creature, the Guardian takes command of the Cutter’s defense, appears able to detect the creature beneath the water, and gives precise orders that allow Odessa to be hauled aboard as it lunges for her.

The Guardian can kill grizzurs in direct combat. He cuts one creature’s throat nearly through, kills another before it reaches camp, and walks back through the flames carrying his sword while men from Turah chant his title.

The Guardian is a highly trained fighter who began weapon training as a child. In sparring he uses extraordinary speed, precision, stamina, and control, repeatedly disarming Odessa or bringing a weapon close enough to kill while stopping short.

The Guardian’s senses can track Odessa in ways ordinary observers cannot. In Ashmore he finds her despite her disguise because the town has only one inn and because he detects the strong odor of her hair dye.

After fighting the bariwolf pack at Ashmore, the Guardian appears to heal with unnatural speed. Wounds that include a gashed arm, facial cuts, and a serious side injury are no longer visible when he returns to Odessa’s room.

The Guardian survived the bite of an infected bariwolf four years earlier and says Lyssa changed him after a week of fever and delirium. His wounds began healing within hours, and his sight, hearing, speed, and strength became stronger than before.

The Guardian undergoes a procedure in which the High Priest siphons Lyssa from his blood for study, but the procedure is not a cure.

Ransom’s abilities come from more than the bariwolf bite alone. Luella’s healers had secretly treated him with a monster-derived elixir while he was unconscious after a severe training wound, and Luella believes the elixir and bite bonded with monster-associated magic to produce Lyssa and enhance him.

Ramsey is trying to reproduce Ransom’s abilities in human soldiers, but the experiments appear lethal because they lack the magical component supplied by the original bariwolf bite.

Odessa describes Lyssa as the source of the Guardian’s special abilities while concealing Ransom’s identity from Alore. She presents his blood as infected monster blood so Alore and any ruler who learns of the sample cannot use it to create Guardian-like soldiers.

Ransom’s reflexes remain extraordinary even as Lyssa worsens. When Mae threatens Odessa, he takes Mae’s sword, catches her hidden knife in midair, and redirects it into the wall.

Ransom’s Lyssa can overwhelm his restraint during violent conflict. In the garden ambush, his silver-eyed rage leaves him unable to stop beating the man who choked Mae until Odessa calls him back.

Skore can siphon Lyssa from Ransom’s blood enough to calm him temporarily. The intervention leaves Ransom weak and does not end his expectation that the infection may still kill him.

The Guardian wears a silver-and-brass-studded leather vest that functions as armor and a grizzur-hide forearm cuff tough enough to deflect Odessa’s knife. The cuff’s carvings commemorate lives he has taken.

The Guardian gives Odessa an elegant, practical sword suited to her hand.

After the castle reception in Roslo, Ransom holds his silver circlet while looking out over the city and then tosses it aside during his argument with Odessa. The circlet is a visible symbol of his Turan crown-prince identity.

At the Quentin bride proceedings, the Guardian overturns the expected marriage arrangement by rejecting Mae and declaring Odessa the bride Zavier will marry that night. He bases the claim on Zavier’s seven female marroweel kills and the Chain of Sevens bride prize.

The Guardian saves Odessa during the attack by a sea creature on the Cutter by coordinating the crew’s response and timing the retrieval that hauls her aboard as the creature leaps for her.

At Ashmore, the Guardian fights a large called pack of bariwolves alone and kills the remaining monsters, including the enormous one-eyed bariwolf, while protecting Odessa.

Ransom spares a surviving tarkin pup after Odessa persuades him to test its blood and finds no visible sign of Lyssa. The same encounter leads him to ask Odessa to promise that she will kill him if the infection takes his control.

When Samuel Hay’s home is set on fire in Ravalli, Ransom rides through the surrounding soldiers, enters the burning house, and carries Samuel’s books, clothes, and belongings out to safety. He threatens to kill the soldiers if they touch Samuel’s possessions.

Ransom is slowed after a Lyssa-siphoning treatment during the Ellder attack, but he still fights through the courtyard and pursues the escaped one-eyed bariwolf after checking Odessa for injuries. He returns alive after a week of hunting the surviving pack with Zavier, the High Priest, and many rangers.

After the infected human attacker reaches Odessa, Ransom confirms that he and Zavier believe someone is trying to recreate his Lyssa-given abilities in other people. The failed subject’s symptoms and death indicate that the attempt is lethal rather than successful.

Ransom learns that Luella’s unauthorized elixir treatment and the later one-eyed bariwolf bite made him the beginning point of Lyssa. The revelation devastates him, and he takes personal blame for the deaths caused by the infection.

During Ramsey’s arrival at Ellder, Ransom breaks free of the soldiers restraining him when Ramsey attacks Odessa. His open defiance exposes the father-son connection to Banner and makes Ransom a direct obstacle to Ramsey’s attempt to take Odessa.

Ransom reaches Odessa in the skeleton forest as bariwolves surround her beside Freya's dying body. He arrives on a black horse and kills a bariwolf before it can attack her; Odessa recognizes the silver-eyed warrior as Ransom and realizes that her husband has found her.

At Roslo, Ransom confronts Brother Dime over the abandonment of Odessa and Evangeline and nearly kills him before Dime apologizes. He also threatens a Quentis guard who grips Odessa’s arm and identifies her as Turah’s future queen.

After the garden ambush in Quentis, Ransom is arrested and confined in the underground barracks. Odessa finds him in the last cell with bent bars, bloodied knuckles, silver eyes, and visible Lyssa symptoms before Skore begins siphoning Lyssa from his blood.

Once Skore’s siphoning has calmed him, Ransom tells Odessa that the creature from Ellder changed into a woman. The explanation leaves the nature of the creature unresolved while Odessa plans to hasten his exile so their household can leave Quentis together.

Odessa’s father gives her the key to Ransom’s cell. The key provides her with a direct means to release him from Quentin custody.

Ransom is the man who spoke Odessa’s marriage oath and supplied the blood that sealed it, making him the concealed husband behind the public Zavier marriage. The public prince identity and Ransom’s concealed crown-prince identity are separate parts of the wedding deception.

Ransom’s full name is Zavier Ransom Wolfe, and he has always gone by Ransom. Dray, his cousin, has acted as his double for eleven years and is the man publicly mistaken for the crown prince.
