Overview

Heaton is introduced as a third-year in Violet Sorrengail’s squad at Basgiath, recognizable among the squad’s senior cadets.

Book I · Ch. 11

After remaining with Violet’s squad until graduation and becoming a lieutenant, Heaton serves as a commissioned rider on active duty. Lilith Sorrengail later assigns them to First Squad, Claw Section as experienced reinforcement for a cadet unit.

Book II · Ch. 60

Appearance

Violet first distinguishes Heaton as the largest-built third-year in the squad. Their uniform includes a circular upper-arm patch showing water and floating spheres, along with a triangular longsword patch that Violet takes as a warning about their skill on the mat.

Heaton wears flames cut and dyed into their hair. The color changes over time, appearing red when Violet first notices it, green after Threshing, and purple during War Games.

Personality and Behavior

Heaton gives the first-years sincere but grim encouragement before class, acknowledging the danger of the Riders Quadrant without making it sound easy.

Combat scenarios excite Heaton. At Montserrat, they ask whether cadets will take part in active scenarios and draw a sharp refusal from Devera; during the five-day War Games scenario, they respond with open delight at the prospect of pretend war.

Relationships

Within Violet’s squad, Heaton works closely with Emery as one of the senior third-years. The two help Rhiannon coach the first-years gained after Threshing during hand-to-hand practice.

During Squad Battle preparations, Heaton helps keep Second Squad following Imogen after Panchek’s announcement and declines command despite being a third-year.

Book I · Ch. 25

Heaton guards Jack Barlowe’s cell with Emery and gives Violet and Imogen practical information about Jack’s condition and questioning schedule. They warn that Jack may have only about twenty-four hours left at his current rate and that they cannot vouch for what he can still do.

Abilities and Skills

Heaton is a strong hand-to-hand fighter and a valued Squad Battle asset. Cianna names them as one of Second Squad’s likely strengths because they are expected to dominate on the mat.

Heaton graduates with Emery after the third-years’ orders are distributed, leaving Violet’s squad as a new lieutenant.

Book II · Ch. 4

Heaton returns from the Pavis mission badly injured, with a severe contusion on the right side of their face and their right arm splinted. They tell Violet that venin and wyvern took Pavis before the riders arrived and expect the wing structure to change after the losses.
