Shield of Sparrows · Bk I · Ch. 1

The capital houses Odessa's father's castle, the royal infirmary, and Alore's workshop, and its court and military presence swell as preparations for the crux migration intensify.

Rites of the Starling · Bk II · Ch. 40

Rites of the Starling · Bk II · Ch. 33

Layout and Features

The city includes white buildings, crowded streets, markets, docks, and a royal castle. From Odessa's cliffside, the city and harbor are visible.

Shield of Sparrows · Bk I · Ch. 1

Roslo's dock district contains walkways, stalls, ships, and merchants selling fish, fruit, herbs, jewelry, tonics, and cloth. Before the shops fully open, the same area is open enough for the walkways and stalls to stand out clearly.

Shield of Sparrows · Bk I · Ch. 8

Roslo has tunnels and shelters built deep into the surrounding rock walls to protect its population during crux migrations. Odessa believes the crux cannot enter them.

Shield of Sparrows · Bk I · Ch. 28

Roslo has strong walls, keeps, and catapults, but thousands of people still died there during the last crux migration, which lasted nearly two months.

Shield of Sparrows · Bk I · Ch. 49

The royal castle is a large, guarded complex with lofty towers, gilded beams, crystal chandeliers, marble floors, underground migration chambers, and tunnels or cellars cut into the surrounding cliffs. Its gallery preserves paintings of crux migrations, and its enormous library keeps its most important books belowground because earlier crux attacks destroyed many volumes.

Rites of the Starling · Bk II · Ch. 30

Andreas's house sits on a hill overlooking Roslo and the bay, with aquamarine water and ships visible from its balcony. The harbor district below has crowded wooden walkways, market stalls, traders, fish sellers, tonic sellers, and numbered streets.

Rites of the Starling · Bk II · Ch. 32

The barracks stand at the city's farthest edge against the stone wall, appearing aboveground as a short, narrow white building with a brown roof and teal door. Beneath that facade, rooms cut into the rock include Roslo's original migration chambers, military dormitories, and windowless jail cells.

Rites of the Starling · Bk II · Ch. 57

The royal castle has king's vaults beneath it, where a recovered orbit is locked away, and Caspia's suite contains a secret compartment under the dressing-room floor for her necklace and journal.

Rites of the Starling · Bk II · Ch. 60

Function and Rules

Roslo's harbor supports trade and maritime traffic, with docks used by Quentin and foreign ships and market stalls supplying food, herbs, jewelry, tonics, and cloth. The dead marroweels brought by the Turans are displayed at the docks after the attacks that endangered the trade network.

Shield of Sparrows · Bk I · Ch. 8

Roslo's infirmary uses korakin during amputations and surgeries because it removes pain, even though the substance can leave patients addicted.

Shield of Sparrows · Bk I · Ch. 37

The restricted castle library stores the most important books belowground to protect them from destruction during crux migrations.

Rites of the Starling · Bk II · Ch. 30

The underground barracks can serve as military housing, migration shelter, and prison. Ransom is held in the last cell of the otherwise empty facility, and two bars in that cell have been bent outward by force.

Rites of the Starling · Bk II · Ch. 57
