Overview
Treow is a Turan forest settlement and military-style waystation built among enormous evergreen trees in tarkin territory. It is less a conventional town than a guarded encampment, with elevated homes, communal services, training grounds, supply traffic, and travelers moving between Turah’s fortresses.
Important Events
King Ramsey Wolfe’s soldiers raid Treow, search its buildings and treehouses, and burn Cathlin’s library under the king’s authority. The destruction leaves only ash where the children’s and adult books had been, while residents inspect damaged homes and rangers remain to contain the fire.
The tarkin attack may have reached the area around Treow while survivors flee back toward the encampment. Shouts, screams, abandoned watchtower positions, and a nearby tarkin den leave the settlement’s immediate wilderness perimeter under active monster concern.
After the attack on Ellder, Ransom returns to Treow and finds the commons, treehouses, and watchtowers empty. The king’s small force has passed through, gathered supplies, warned the residents about the crux scout, and led the evacuation toward Allesaria, leaving behind only traces such as Odessa’s bloodstained knives.
Location and Access
Treow stands inside a Turan forest rather than along ordinary streets, roads, or squares. Its position in tarkin territory helps explain why the settlement is built above the ground and guarded against intruders and monsters.
The settlement’s boundary is watched from towers and controlled with whistle signals. Departures and safe approaches are announced by different whistles, and wagons leave through a monitored route rather than an open road.
Treow can be reached by forest routes from Ellder and also serves as a departure point for travel toward Ravalli. The paths around it run through dense trees before opening into broader country farther from the encampment.
Layout and Features
Treow’s outer clearing contains a wooden fence, stables or a stable-like building, a corral or paddock, and a watchtower built into a tree. Deeper inside the forest, homes sit high in enormous evergreens and are linked by rope bridges, ladders, and wooden walkways.
The commons is Treow’s central gathering space, arranged around four sturdy log buildings: the dining hall, mercantile, laundry, and infirmary-library. Tables and chairs fill the open area, and the surrounding buildings provide the settlement’s basic communal, medical, supply, and reading services.
Treow’s library occupies a very small room at the end of the infirmary building, with shelves packed tightly enough to make movement difficult. Treehouses in the settlement use rope ladders, skylights, and pulley systems, and the forest trails between them are thin, winding, and sometimes little more than trodden grass.
The settlement has multiple watchtower positions, lionwick snares, occupied training areas, and defined borders that can be learned by someone living there long enough to explore and observe its routines.
Function and Rules
Treow functions more like a military encampment than a permanent village. It receives regular shipments from Ashmore, can request additional goods from Perris or Ellder, serves the pony-rider postal network, and maintains training stations for crossbows, swords, and archery.
Treow has no formal school because teachers are considered safer behind fortress or city walls than in the wilds. Its children rely on parents, local projects, and a small library collection that includes children’s books as well as adult works on Turah, monsters, and other Calandran kingdoms.
During Odessa’s stay, her assigned treehouse functions as a controlled refuge rather than a freely accessible home. Its rope ladder is available by day but removed at night, leaving her unable to descend safely after sunset and making the Guardian’s supervision part of her daily life in the settlement.
The combat training Odessa receives in Treow has practical use beyond the settlement. Tillia’s training-ring techniques later help Odessa escape a guard who grabs her by the hair during an ambush in Quentis.
Residents and Affiliations
Treow houses or hosts soldiers and their families traveling between fortresses, along with longer-term residents such as Tillia and Halston. Its population includes people attached to Turah’s military, supply, postal, and settlement work rather than a purely civilian town community.
Mariette is Treow’s caretaker and carries enough local authority that Tillia will not move Brielle and Jocelyn without her permission. Rangers, pony riders, children, mothers, and soldiers using the training areas are present in Treow.
Treow is welcoming to returning Turans, especially when rangers come back to their families and the dining hall becomes a place of communal celebration. That warmth does not make the settlement safe for everyone, since Zavier says Odessa and Evangeline must be moved before the crux migration begins.
After the crux attack, Treow’s residents evacuate toward Allesaria after the king’s remaining troops warn them. Mariette is the only person Ransom finds there when he reaches the settlement, and the rest of the community has gone on toward Allesaria.
